I am leaving for Tokyo in literally 4 days and I realized I still dont have a decent tripod for my ZV-1F. My logic was just to go handheld but the crop factor with stabilization is killing me so I need a handle/tripod combo. I looked at that Sony GP-VPT2BT shooting grip but its way over my $60 budget and I read the bluetooth pairing is a nightmare. Then I saw the Joby GorillaPod but people say the legs get super floppy after a few weeks. Im stressed because I need something sturdy but small enough for my backpack. Is there a middle ground I missed? I need to order this tonight to get it on time...

Unfortunately, most cheap vlogging sticks are plastic garbage. I had issues with the GorillaPod too; those friction joints fail way too fast under actual use. For your ZV-1F, just grab the Ulanzi MT-16 Extendable Tripod with Cold Shoe. Its way sturdier than the Joby and fits your budget. Pro tip: the 22cm to 44cm extension helps offset that annoying ZV-1F crop factor without adding much weight.

Like someone mentioned, that Sony grip is such a ripoff lol. I totally get the stress though! I did a two week stint in Kyoto and Osaka last year and spent forever looking for the perfect handle. I eventually landed on the SmallRig Tabletop Mini Tripod with Ball Head 2664 and honestly its a beast. Its basically all metal which is amazing for the price, so you wont have to deal with those annoying floppy legs after a week of walking around Tokyo. Another fantastic choice if you want something really sleek is the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod Black MTPIXI-B. Its super iconic for a reason! It doesnt extend, but it feels incredibly solid in the hand as a grip. I love how it just fits in my jacket pocket. Plus both of these are way under your $60 limit so you can spend that extra cash on some amazing ramen! Youre gonna have such a blast out there!

Re: "Like someone mentioned, that Sony grip is such..." - honestly, youre just paying a premium for the brand logo there. I have been extremely satisfied with the Manfrotto PIXI EVO 2-Section Mini Tripod Black for my travel rigs. Its a much more methodical choice if you care about engineering over marketing. Here is the technical breakdown of why it works well for the ZV-1F:

  • Payload Capacity: It supports up to 2.5kg (5.5 lbs), so the camera wont cause any joint creep or sag over time.
  • Versatility: The two-section legs provide five different height adjustments for uneven surfaces.
  • Build: It uses a mix of Adapto polymer and aluminum, keeping it light at only 250g. If you check technical reviews on sites like DPReview or camera gear databases, this model consistently beats the GorillaPod in joint longevity tests. I am very happy with how it fits into a standard backpack pocket too. It provides a very stable base for vlogging without the bulk of a full-sized setup.
