Ive been shooting on my old A6400 for years now and honestly it has served me well but I'm finally ready to make the jump to full frame this summer. With Prime Day 2026 literally right around the corner I am refreshing the deals page like a crazy person trying to figure out where to put my money. My budget is pretty firm around the $2000 mark for just the body since I already have a couple of full frame lenses I bought in anticipation of this upgrade - specifically that 24-70 GM which cost me a fortune lol.
I'm stuck between three main paths right now. First there is the A7 IV which is the old reliable choice but I'm seeing rumors it might get a massive price cut to clear stock. It feels solid in the hand but I worry it is starting to feel a bit last gen compared to the newer AI autofocus stuff everyone is talking about lately. Then there is the A7C II which I love because it is so compact and has that new AI chip but I am worried about the single card slot since I want to start doing more paid event gigs here in Seattle. Losing photos because of a card failure sounds like a total nightmare. The dark horse is if the A7R V somehow drops down near $2500 but that might be a pipe dream even for Prime Day sales... do you guys think the extra resolution is worth stretching the budget for?
I mostly do street photography and small indoor events where lighting is usually pretty garbage. I need something that handles high ISO well without looking like a grainy mess. If you had to choose between the workhorse A7 IV at a steep discount or the newer tech in the A7C II for a bit more money which one would you pull the trigger on? Or is there some other Sony body I should be watching for when the deals go live? I'm just trying to get the most bang for my buck before the deals disappear...

I was so nervous about moving to full frame but I have been super satisfied with a Sony Alpha 7R IV 61.0MP Mirrorless. No complaints at all. I actually had a card fail on me once during a shoot, so those dual slots are everything to me.
- stick with dual slots for events
- get Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II 128GB cards Safety is basically the most important thing when people are paying you... keep that in mind.

The Sony Alpha 7 IV 33MP Full-Frame is probably the most logical choice for those paid event gigs. Even if the autofocus feels a bit older than the newer AI tech, having dual card slots is basically non-negotiable for professional work. I wouldnt risk a client's photos on a single slot like the Sony Alpha 7C II 33MP Compact Full-Frame has, even though the smaller body is better for street photography. Regarding the high ISO, the A7 IV sensor handles low light really well. The Sony Alpha 7R V 61MP Full-Frame is a beast, but the files are massive and it wont necessarily give you cleaner images in garbage lighting than the 33MP sensor. If the A7 IV drops under $1800, grab it. Its a solid workhorse for a mix of street and pro events... especially with your GM glass.

I think you should prioritize the sensors specifically engineered for high-sensitivity performance. Not sure but I recall hearing those models might see significant price cuts soon. IIRC, the noise floor is much lower, which is vital for indoor events. I've been very satisfied with that tech; it works well and I honestly have no complaints. It's a more methodical approach to your low-light needs.
