so I am leaving for a trip to Japan in literally four days and I realized my kit lens just isnt gonna cut it for the night shots I want to take. I have been staring at reviews all night and I am totally stuck. I basically need something sharp but cheap because I already spent way too much on flights and hotels.

I am torn between a few options:

  • Sigma 16mm f1.4
  • Sigma 30mm f1.4
  • Viltrox 23mm f1.4

The 16mm looks amazing for those wide street shots and maybe some vlogging but it looks kinda bulky to carry around all day in Tokyo. Then there is the 30mm which people say is like the gold standard for the a6400 but I am worried it might be too tight for indoor stuff or narrow alleys? I also saw the Viltrox which is right in the middle but I have heard the autofocus can be a bit hit or miss compared to the Sigmas.

Budget is super tight like under $350 and I need to buy it tonight so it ships in time for my flight. Which one should I pull the trigger on for a mix of street and low light? The 16 is tempting for the wide view but that 30 is so compact and easy to pack...

Honestly, you are gonna have a blast in Japan regardless, but the stress of picking gear last minute is real. Going with Sigma is usually a reliable bet for those Sony crop sensors. I have used their glass in Tokyo before and the image quality is generally consistent for the price point.

  • The wider options work well for capturing neon signs and narrow streets.
  • Middle-of-the-road focal lengths are a decent option for general people watching.
  • Autofocus performance tends to be more consistent on these than some other budget brands I have tested lately. Tbh, just get any Sigma Contemporary Prime Lens that fits your budget and dont overthink it too much. Fast apertures are useful when you are hitting the izakayas at night. Sticking with that brand for the reliability usually works out fine... have a good trip!
