Which budget prime lens works best for Sony ZV-E10 vlogging?

Honestly I'm about ready to throw this kit lens out the window. I got the ZV-E10 because everyone said it was the best for vlogging but the 16-50mm power zoom thing that came with it is just... its so bad. The low light performance is actual garbage and everything looks super soft if I'm not standing directly under a studio light. Im planning this big solo trip to Tokyo in like three weeks and I really want to capture the neon lights and the night markets but every test shot I take inside my apartment looks like it was filmed on a potato from 2010.

Its super frustrating because I spent all this money on the body and now I feel like I cant even use it for what I wanted. I need something way faster but I dont have a ton of cash left after booking my flights. My budget is strictly under 350 bucks. I've been looking at some prime lenses because I heard they're sharper but im so confused by the crop factor stuff and what actually works for handheld vlogging. I dont want something so zoomed in that my face takes up the whole screen but I also want that blurry background look everyone has.

The Sigma 16mm seems okay but people say it’s huge and heavy for a small camera like this? I dont want to carry a brick around all day. I saw some cheaper brands like Viltrox or maybe the Sony 11mm but thats probably too expensive for me right now. Is there a "sweet spot" lens that doesnt cost a fortune? I just want my footage to look crisp and professional for once instead of this grainy mess. What are you guys actually using for daily vlogs that doesnt break the bank...

Omg I totally feel your pain with that kit lens! It is basically a paperweight once the sun goes down lol. I have used pretty much every budget prime on this mount over the years, and you are totally right to want an upgrade before Tokyo. For those neon night markets, you absolutely need something with a fast aperture. If you want that crisp, professional look with the blurry background, you gotta go with a prime. My absolute favorite for the ZV-E10 is the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E. Honestly, its an absolute beast in low light and the sharpness is just worlds away from that 16-50mm junk! I know people say its heavy, but the image quality is so amazing you wont even care. Quick tip though... since the ZV-E10 has a 1.5x crop, that 16mm becomes a 24mm. If you turn on Active Stabilization, it crops even more! If you find the Sigma too bulky for all-day walking in Shinjuku, definitely check out the Samyang AF 12mm f/2.0 E. It is super light, way wider for handheld vlogging so your face isnt cramped, and still fast enough for night shots. I used it on a recent trip and loved it! Just make sure you get the AF version, not the manual one. Youre gonna have such a fantastic time in Tokyo, the footage will look incredible with either of these! Let me know if you need more help deciding!

Are you planning on using a gimbal or just hand-holding the camera with a grip? It makes a huge difference because the ZV-E10 sensor readout is honestly pretty slow, and you'll get that nasty jello effect if you're too shaky while walking through Tokyo. I've spent way too much money trying to fix this same problem and tbh, most budget primes still have annoying trade-offs.

  • Samyang AF 12mm f/2.0 E: This is probably your best bet. Its super wide which is a lifesaver for vlogging because you dont have to stretch your arm out like a selfie stick. Its light, fits the budget, and the f/2.0 is decent for those neon lights, though obviously not as bright as the heavier f/1.4 glass.
  • Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary: I actually hated using this on the ZV-E10 for travel. Its way too front-heavy for such a tiny body. It feels like the lens is wearing the camera, not the other way around. The image is sharp but the weight makes it a pain for all-day carry.
  • Viltrox AF 23mm f/1.4 E: I tried this for street style stuff but unfortunately its just too tight for handheld vlogging. You will basically just be a giant talking head with no background. If I were you, Id go with the Samyang. 16mm is okay, but once you turn on any digital stabilization, it crops in so much that your face fills the frame. Tokyo is way too pretty to crop out like that...
