I recently got the Sony a7 IV and am loving it so far for photos. I'm a videographer and want to start using it more for video projects. I shoot a mix of talking head interviews, b-roll, and event footage.

What video settings do you recommend on the a7 IV to get the best image quality? I'm thinking about things like picture profile, codec, resolution/frame rate, S-Log, etc.

Any tips from other a7 IV shooters on dialing in great video settings for different scenarios? What's worked well for you?

Thanks!

I've been trying to dial in my own setup lately too and honestly im just so satisfied with how this camera handles everything. It hasnt let me down once which is a big deal for me since I'm always paranoid about gear failing. It actually reminds me of this one shoot I did for a friends backyard wedding...

  • The humidity was basically 100 percent
  • I kept bumping the tripod like a total amateur
  • Some kid almost knocked the whole rig over with a frisbee I spent the whole afternoon just stressing out that the thing would overheat or the card would just die on me or something. But nope, it just kept chugging along without any issues. Its such a relief when the tech just works and you dont have to baby it too much. Still getting the hang of all the deep menu stuff but so far no complaints at all...

I am just so stoked for you! I jumped ship from Canon a while back and honestly the reliability of this Sony is just mind-blowing. I definitely agree with the S-Cinetone suggestion for those interviews because the colors are finally looking amazing compared to the older Sony look. Since I'm always super cautious about gear failing, here is what I do:

  • Set the recording mode to 'Simultaneous' so you have an instant backup on the second card
  • Stick with XAVC S for those long events to keep the file sizes manageable and the camera cool You are gonna love this thing! It's such a fantastic workhorse and way more dependable than my previous setups.

^ This. Also, I've spent a lot of time testing different setups and I learned some hard lessons about pushing the hardware too far. Last summer I was doing a DIY documentary project and thought I needed the maximum quality possible for every single clip. It backfired during a long interview when the camera just gave up on me. Things I've learned to watch out for:

  • Heat management is huge, so I always flip the screen away from the body to help it breathe.
  • Be careful with the fastest codecs if you arent using the top tier cards because it might just stop recording mid-sentence.
  • Make sure to test your computers playback before committing to 10-bit files because my older machine basically melted trying to scrub through the timeline. I ended up losing some great footage because I was too focused on the specs and didnt think about the practical side of things... honestly, now I stick to settings that I know wont fail under pressure.

For easy editing and quick social media turnaround, I recommend shooting in the Neutral picture profile with minor saturation/contrast adjustments. You still have a good amount of latitude for color correction too. Just watch the highlights.

As an a7 IV user, I've found these settings to work great for different scenarios:

  1. Talking head interviews:

    • 4K 24fps, S-Cinetone, XAVC S-I
    • Custom white balance
    • Use Face/Eye AF for sharp focus
  2. B-roll:

    • 4K 60fps or 120fps (HD), S-Log3, XAVC S-I
    • Gives you flexibility for slow-motion and color grading
  3. Event footage:

    • 4K 30fps, S-Cinetone or Standard picture profile, XAVC S
    • Balances quality and file size for longer recordings

General tips:

  • Use manual focus for static shots
  • Invest in good ND filters for outdoor shooting
  • Set zebras to 94% for proper exposure in S-Log3

Hope this helps!
