Which Sony headphones are actually going to survive a 14-hour flight and keep the cabin noise out? Ive been using my old XM3s forever and know the lineup pretty well but the hinge finally gave up on me mid-trip and now Im scrambling.

I was looking at the WH-1000XM5 since everyone raves about them but Ive heard the auto-NC optimization is total garbage for planes because it keeps recalibrating every time you move your head or the pressure changes. Is that actually true? My budget is about $400 and I need to grab something before my flight to London next Tuesday. Should I just hunt for a pair of XM4s instead or is the XM5 noise cancelling worth the headache...

It's unfortunately true about the auto-optimization. After logging thousands of miles with the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones, the Adaptive Sound Control feels like a technical mess for flying. Since Sony removed the manual Optimizer button, you're at the mercy of an algorithm that tweaks ANC levels whenever cabin pressure shifts. It's super jarring when you're just trying to sleep. Since the XM4 was already suggested, these might work for your London trip:

TL;DR: Buy Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones. Sadly, my XM5 kept recalibrating every time I moved on my flight to Rome. Save your cash tho; the XM4 is just more reliable for travel.
