I recently purchased a Sony a7 IV and am looking for recommendations on the best batteries to use with it. The camera comes with a Sony NP-FZ100 battery, but I'm wondering if there are any good third-party options that provide similar or better performance at a lower cost.

I'd like batteries that have a high capacity so I can shoot for extended periods without needing to swap them out frequently. Fast charging capabilities would also be a plus.

Do any of you have experience using aftermarket batteries with the a7 IV? I've heard some mixed things about off-brand batteries in terms of compatibility, charge holding, and overall longevity.

Any suggestions on the best batteries for the Sony a7 IV would be much appreciated!

Sony NP-FZ100 originals are expensive but worth it. I've tried third-party options and always come back to OEM. Better performance in cold weather and more accurate battery readouts. Wait for sales though - sometimes you can get them for 20% off.

Third-party battery options, such as the Wasabi Power NP-FZ100, Powerextra NP-FZ100, and Neewer NP-FZ100, are popular alternatives to Sony's original batteries. These batteries are known for their reliable performance and cost-effectiveness, often providing similar power output and longevity. To ensure the best experience, verify that the third-party battery is compatible with your charger and has positive user reviews. By choosing a well-regarded third-party battery, you can save money without compromising on quality or performance. However, it's crucial to do your research and select a reputable brand to avoid potential issues and ensure that your camera functions optimally. With the right third-party battery, you can extend your shooting time and capture more memories without worrying about running out of power.

Purchased NEEWER NP-FZ100 2280mAh battery with charger. Never exhausted battery during shooting; disc space runs out first on Sony main battery. Two extra batteries serve as backup. Although slightly lower capacity than Sony, they're reliable alternatives for extended photography sessions.

To add to the point above: I definitely agree with Marshall about having at least three batteries in your bag for peace of mind. In my experience over the years, the stress of watching that percentage drop during a golden hour shoot just isnt worth it. I've tried many power solutions, including some DIY setups with external power banks and dummy batteries for long-form video, which can be a real life-saver if you dont mind a bit of extra cable clutter. Before you commit to a brand tho, what's your typical shooting day look like? Are you doing mostly short bursts of stills or heavy 4K video recording? Also, are you looking for something that supports the internal USB-C charging on the a7 IV or are you planning to use an external charger exclusively?

I've been using the Sony NP-FZ100 batteries (the official ones) for about a year now with my a7 IV and they're solid. Yeah, they're pricier than third-party options, but the battery life is noticeably better and I've never had any compatibility issues. I typically get around 600-700 shots per charge with mixed photo/video work. If you're doing a lot of video, definitely grab at least 2-3 batteries regardless of which brand you choose.
