Hey everyone! I’ve been using my Sony a6400 for video, but the battery life is killing me during long shoots. I also need more mounting points for my mic and monitor. I’ve looked at SmallRig and Meike, but I'm worried about blocking the flip-up screen. Does anyone have a favorite setup that balances ergonomics and accessibility?

Unfortunately, I had issues with the Meike MK-A6300 Vertical Battery Grip because it blocks the screen. Not as good as expected. Realy disappointing. I suggest the SmallRig Camera Cage for Sony A6400 2310 with the SmallRig Cold Shoe Relocation Plate 2317. Pros: 1/4-20 mounting points. Cons: power. Comparing Cage vs Grip, the cage wins for ergonomics, tho battery life still sucks... idk maybe try a dummy battery? gl

sooo i had a moment to think about this... basically i struggled with the same stuff for years. i found that using a battery grip just made the flip screen useless. i ended up trying the Sony NP-FW50 Dummy Battery to USB-A Power Cable with a power bank.

TL;DR:
- Sony NP-FW50 Dummy Battery: Pros: Endless power. Cons: Cable mess.
- Tilta Full Camera Cage for Sony a6400: Pros: Better protection. Cons: Pricey.

Worked for me cuz it was simple! gl

I spent ages researching the market for this exact reason cuz i was realy paranoid about third-party electronics or a poorly fitted cage stressing the mount on my a6400. After comparing a bunch of brands and looking at their design philosophies, i realized that most people overlook the tighter tolerances of the mid-range stuff. Basically, i found that while the big names are popular, some other brands handle the flip screen issue with a bit more precision if youre worried about long-term wear:

  • 8Sinn Sony A6400 Cage
  • This one is pricey but the machining is way more precise than the cheaper brands, which gives me peace of mind for the camera body.
  • Neewer Aluminum Alloy Camera Video Cage
  • A decent entry-level option, tho i found the mounting points can be a bit loose if you arent careful.
  • SmallRig 1638 Top Handle
  • I ended up using this to move my accessories completely out of the way of the flip-up screen. I eventually decided to avoid the battery grips entirely after seeing how many people had issues with them shorting out or feeling flimsy. I definitely think a more conservative cage setup with a solid handle is the way to go for safety tho.

sooo i been thinking about your question for a bit. honestly i went through this exact same struggle last year and it was super frustrating. i spent a bunch of money on rigs that just made the camera way too bulky and heavy. unfortunately i had issues with several setups where i couldnt even reach the control dials properly... not as good as expected tbh. just sharing my experience: i found that the simplest way to keep things cheap was using a SmallRig L-Bracket for Sony A6400 and A6300 2331. it moves the mic mounting point to the side so the screen actually works!! for the battery stuff i basically just used an Anker PowerCore 10,000mAh Portable Charger strapped to the tripod (at least thats what worked for me). it looks a bit messy but seriously it was way cheaper than those expensive power things and literally lasted all day long. gl!
