so i finally bit the bullet and got a sony a6400 for my trip to kyoto next month. super excited but honestly kind of overwhelmed by the amount of stuff people say you NEED to buy. i was looking at those smallrig cages because they look cool but then i saw some people say it just adds bulk for no reason if youre not doing heavy video stuff? im just taking photos and maybe some short clips of the temples. i also keep seeing everyone scream about extra batteries because the np-fw50 ones apparently die in like five minutes lol. i found these off-brand dual chargers on amazon but then other people say they might fry the camera so now im nervous about that. my budget for accessories is about 250 bucks max since i spent most of it on the camera body.
here is what im looking for:
im still a total newbie at this so i dont want to waste money on pro gear i wont use. what are the actual essentials for someone just walking around a city all day?
I absolutely love my a6400! For Kyoto, definitely stick to reliable gear because I once had a cheap battery swell inside my camera and it was terrifying.
Kyoto is amazing but those temple stairs are no joke! I once lugged a huge bag there and totally regretted it. You're gonna want to stay light!
Saw this a bit late but honestly, skip the cage. It looks cool but it's just extra weight you dont want when you're hitting those 20k steps in Kyoto. Plus it can scratch the body if you're not careful when mounting it. For the battery situation, I'd be really wary of those super cheap chargers from random brands on Amazon. They might work fine for a while, but I've seen some get way too hot and thats never good for the camera internals. If you're nervous, I would suggest looking at Wasabi Power Battery Charger for some backups. They've been around a while and are generally safer than the no-name stuff. Also, maybe consider a dedicated wall charger from Watson instead of charging through the camera body itself. It's just a safer bet for the internal electronics and honestly more convenient since you can charge while still using the camera. For the strap, definitely ditch the stock one. It's basically sandpaper on your neck. I'd suggest checking out the various padded options from Peak Design—you really can't go wrong there for comfort. For the bag, if you want something that isnt a backpack, look at the messenger style bags from Think Tank Photo. They're much more discreet and dont scream "expensive camera here" to everyone on the street. About the tripod... since you're walking so much, I'd look into the flexible ones from Joby. They're light enough that you won't even feel them in your bag. And yes, absolutely get a screen protector. Sony screens are notorious for getting scratched or having the coating peel off. Just get any tempered glass protector from ULBTER and you'll be fine. Better safe than sorry!
