Been shooting Sony for a decade now but just upgraded to the a7R V and an a1 for a big wildlife trip to Alaska in three weeks and realized my old grips dont fit quite right. Are people still sticking with the official VG-C4EM or is there a better third-party one for these newer bodies?
Coming back to this... @Reply #1 - good point! The official Sony VG-C4EM Vertical Grip is the safest choice, but the price is steep. You might want to consider the Neewer VG-C4EM Replacement Vertical Grip to save cash. Just be careful though, third-party seals aren't as reliable. The Meike MK-C4EM Vertical Battery Grip is okay too, but some report battery drain issues. For Alaska, make sure those seals are legit.
> Are people still sticking with the official VG-C4EM or is there a better third-party one for these newer bodies? Honestly, just stick with the official Sony VG-C4EM Vertical Grip for a1 and a7R V. I took one to the Patagonia mountains last year for a massive shoot, and the build quality is insane! The magnesium alloy sealing matches the camera body perfectly. I have tried cheaper third-party options before, and tbh, they just dont have the same reliable battery communication protocols. When you are out in the Alaskan cold, the last thing you want is a camera glitching out or failing to recognize battery levels! The VG-C4EM integrates so smoothly with the weather-sealed ports. It feels like one solid block of metal. It is pricey, but for a big wildlife trip, reliability is everything. Dont compromise your gear!
