I just bought the Sony a7R VI and honestly I think I might have bitten off way more than I can chew with this thing. It cost me so much money and now I am looking at it and feeling totally overwhelmed and anxious about breaking it. I am taking this huge trip to Iceland in like three weeks and I really want to make sure I dont run out of juice while I am out looking for the northern lights or whatever but I keep seeing people talk about these battery grips and I dont even really know what they are or if I actually need one. My friend said it makes the camera easier to hold if you have bigger hands which I do have pretty big hands and I am worried about dropping this expensive piece of glass and metal into a glacier or something.

I looked online and there are so many options and some are like 400 dollars and some are 50 dollars on amazon and I am just so scared of buying something that might fry the electronics inside because I worked extra shifts at the warehouse for six months just to afford the camera body alone. My budget for a grip is maybe like 200 or 300 dollars if it is really worth it but if I can get away with something cheaper that would be great too since I still need to buy a warm coat for the trip. Is it just a handle with more batteries in it? Do I have to take the door off the bottom of my camera to put it on because that sounds terrifying and I dont want to break the little hinge thing and ruin the whole thing before I even leave.

I am really sorry if this is like a super basic question but I have never owned a real camera before this one and the manual is like a thousand pages long and I am just panicking a little bit and feel like I am drowning in technical stuff. Does anyone know which one is actually safe to use with the a7R VI? Is there a specific Sony brand one I have to get or are the off-brand ones okay for a beginner like me who doesnt know what they are doing...

Re: "^ This. Also, I respectfully disagree that you..." - honestly, I wouldnt risk off-brand electronics in Iceland! The sealing on the Sony VG-C4EM Vertical Grip is just amazing for that weather. If you need to save money for that coat tho, check this out:

Honestly, if you worked that hard for the cash, do not risk it with a cheap knockoff. Unfortunately, the third-party market for these is a bit of a mess and they are just not as good as expected when things get cold or damp. I have seen those $50 grips fail or even drain batteries while the camera is off, which is basically a nightmare when you are out in the wild. For Iceland, you really want the weather sealing you get with the official stuff. You should stick with the Sony VG-C5 Vertical Grip for Alpha 7R VI. It is pricey but it fits perfectly and wont fry your circuits. Regarding the battery door, it is designed to pop off. There is a tiny spring-loaded latch near the hinge. You just slide it and the door comes off, then you tuck it into a slot on the grip itself so it stays safe. TL;DR: Get the Sony VG-C5 Vertical Grip. Third-party options are too risky for an expensive new body.

^ This. Also, I respectfully disagree that you absolutely have to buy the Sony brand to keep the camera safe. While official gear is great, you can save a lot of money without frying your circuits. Most modern grips use standard voltage regulators that match the 7.2V output of the Sony NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Battery. If you are worried about the weather in Iceland, look at these:

  • Meike MK-A7R V Pro Vertical Battery Grip - it has a decent build and includes a wireless remote for long exposures.
  • Neewer VG-C4EM Replacement Vertical Battery Grip - very affordable and feels solid in the hand. Regarding the battery door, dont worry. There is a small sliding latch on the hinge. It pops off in two seconds and there is a specific storage slot on the grip itself so you wont lose it. It is designed to be user-friendly, not permanent. It makes the body much taller, which will definitely help if your hands are larger.
