I recently purchased the excellent Sony a7 IV mirrorless camera and am now looking for a suitable tripod. As I plan to use the camera for landscape and night photography while traveling, stability and portability are my top concerns. My budget is around $600.

If anyone has experience using a tripod with the a7 IV, please share your recommendations! I'd prefer carbon fiber or aluminum construction. A ball head seems easiest to compose shots quickly. Ideal features are smooth pan/tilt controls, quick release plate, and ability to hold at least 8 lbs capacity. Let me know which travel tripods have worked well for you when paired with the a7 IV. Thanks!

@lapbook For landscape and night photography, stability is definitely key, especially when traveling. Based on your needs, I’d recommend checking out the SCG T6 Sleek Carbon Fiber Tripod. It’s designed with an ultimate fluid head for lightweight camera setups (0-15 lbs), which makes it a great fit for your a7 IV. The sliding balance plate offers 12cm of adjustment, helping you easily balance your camera. With a 75mm ball fitting and an illuminated level bubble, leveling is super easy and precise, even in low light—perfect for night shots. Plus, the tripod weighs only 9.5 lbs, so it’s portable enough for travel without sacrificing stability.

If portability and stability are your top priorities for a tripod to pair with your Sony a7 IV, look no further than the Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod. Weighing only 2.81 lbs, this lightweight yet sturdy tripod offers impressive stability thanks to its carbon fiber construction. It packs down impressively small but extends to a maximum height of 60 inches. Rapid one-handed deployment and adjustment make this tripod extremely convenient for on-the-go shooting. Despite the compact size when folded, the tripod can securely hold up to 20 lbs of camera gear. So you’ll have no issues mounting your a7 IV with a variety of lenses. For photographers who demand stellar performance in a portable package, the Peak Design tripod is a superb choice.

Saw this earlier and wanted to chime in. Re: "Check out the Manfrotto Befree Advanced. It's a..." - that is a decent budget choice, but since you have 600 dollars, you can get something way more stable for night photography. I usually suggest looking for a tripod without a center column if you want max stability for landscapes. It keeps the camera closer to the apex and cuts down on vibration significantly, which is huge for long exposures.

Wait really?? Thats actually super helpful. I always thought it was the other way around.

Manfrotto 055 Carbon is likely the most versatile tripod, balancing weight, size, and stability well. However, I personally favor the Berlebach Report. Despite appearances, it's not overly heavy, though it is somewhat bulky.

I use Benro Mach3 Long Carbon Fiber 3 Series Tripod, works great on my a7IV.

Check out the Manfrotto Befree Advanced. It's a great balance of price and performance for the a7 IV. Lightweight aluminum construction, folds down small for travel, and the ball head is very responsive. I've used mine for everything from landscapes to long exposures and it hasn't let me down yet.

I've been using the Gitzo GT1545T Traveler Series 1 Carbon Fiber Tripod with the a7 IV and love it. The tripod weighs only 2.3 lbs but supports up to 22 lbs, so it's very stable. It folds down to 16.7" for easy portability. The Carbon eXact tubes are sturdy and resist flex. I paired it with the Gitzo GH1382TQD Series 1 Traveler Center Ball Head, which has silky smooth pan/tilt, Arca-type quick release, and independent friction control. The combo is pricey at $630 but well worth it for demanding use.

I've been using the Manfrotto MT190XPRO4 with my a7 IV, and it's been great. It's a sturdy aluminum tripod that can handle the weight of the camera plus heavier lenses. The center column can be positioned horizontally, which is great for macro or overhead shots. It's not the lightest option, but it's very stable and reliable.
