I recently got the new Sony a7 IV mirrorless camera but can't seem to figure out how to enable the touch screen functionality. The screen is not responding to touch inputs. I've checked the menu but can't find any setting for this. Does anyone know the steps to turn on touch screen for the a7 IV?

  • I totally agree with being careful about the screen protector situation. Honestly, I would suggest checking if there is any moisture or oil on your fingertips before you try using the screen. These sensors are kinda sensitive to that stuff. Make sure to use a clean MagicFiber Microfiber Cleaning Cloths to wipe the screen down first. You might also want to consider if you have any static build-up from your clothes or a bag. I usually touch something metal to ground myself just in case... sounds paranoid maybe but it helps with reliability. Also, if you do get a protector, stay away from the cheap plastic films and maybe try something like the Expert Shield Glass Screen Protector for Sony a7 IV which is known for better touch passthrough. If the screen still isnt responding, check if your focus mode is set to something that overrides touch, like some of the manual assist modes.

To add to the point above: honestly, check if you accidentally tapped the little touch icon on the actual LCD screen. It is tucked in the corner and unfortunately, ive bumped it way too many times while shooting. It disables the whole thing even if the menu says it is on. Also, watch out for crappy screen protectors. I bought a cheap five dollar pack for my Sony a7 IV Full Frame Camera and it made the touch response totally laggy. Not as good as expected at all. If youre having trouble, maybe peel it off and see if it works better. I ended up getting the Sony PCK-LG2 Screen Protect Glass Sheet instead. It costs more but actually works without needing to stab the screen lol.

The touch screen should be enabled by default on the a7 IV. However, there are a couple things you can check:

  1. Go to the Setup menu -> Operation Customization -> Touch Operation and make sure "Touch Operation" is set to "On".
  2. Also check that "Touch Pad" is enabled under the same menu. This lets you use the rear screen as a touch pad.

If those are already enabled, you may need to do a hard reset of the camera by going to Setup -> Reset/Initialize -> Initialize and selecting Yes.
