I'm looking for recommendations on the best microphone for my Sony a7 III. I primarily shoot interviews and vlogs, and I want clear audio quality. My budget is around $200-300. Should I go for a shotgun mic, a lavalier, or something else? Any specific models you recommend?

DJI Mic 2 is recommended.

Found this thread while checking out some audio specs online and just had to add my two cents! If you are shooting on the a7 III, you really need to consider how the mic gain interacts with the cameras somewhat noisy preamps. While the others mentioned Rode, I think Sennheiser offers a much cleaner signal path for that specific budget range!

  • Gain sensitivity: The <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+400+Shotgun+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 Shotgun Microphone has a +20dB boost which is fantastic because it lets you turn the camera gain way down to avoid that hissing sound.
  • Build quality: Its got a super robust internal shock mount that is amazing at killing handling noise during vlogs.
  • Versatility: It comes with a locking 3.5mm cable which is way more professional and secure than the standard pop-in ones. You should definitely check out the site Sound on Sound for their guides on polar patterns, or look up Curtis Judd on YouTube for the most detailed technical reviews of these specific models. He really deep dives into the self-noise levels which is huge for interviews... it basically changed how I record audio!

For your Sony a7 III, consider the RØDE VideoMic NTG shotgun microphone. It offers broadcast-quality audio, a supercardioid pattern for focused sound, and a rechargeable battery lasting up to 30 hours.

I've been using the Rode VideoMic Pro+ with my a7 III for about two years now and couldn't be happier. The sound quality is excellent, it has built-in shock mounting to reduce handling noise, and the auto power feature (turns on/off with camera) saves battery life. It's not the cheapest option (~$300), but worth every penny if you're serious about audio quality.

DJI Mic Mini is a compact microphone for a7 III. Recommended.
