I'm looking to get an off-camera flash to use with my Sony a7 III mirrorless camera. I mainly shoot portraits, events and weddings. I'd like a high-quality, reliable flash that integrates well with the Sony system. Any suggestions
For your Sony a7 III, focusing on portraits, events, and weddings, I highly recommend the Godox V1-S Flash. It's perfectly compatible with Sony, offering a natural and soft light ideal for flattering portraits and dynamic event settings. The V1-S is part of Godox's wireless system, allowing for easy off-camera control, crucial for wedding and event photography. Its quick recycle time, powerful output, and TTL compatibility with the a7 III ensure you capture every moment perfectly. Additionally, the V1-S's impressive battery life and durable build make it a reliable choice for busy photographers. It's a great blend of performance and convenience.
Saved for later, ty!
^ This. Also, totally agree that a touchscreen is amazing for high-pressure stuff!! It is such a relief not to fumble with dials. I am curious though, are you planning to keep the flash off-camera on a stand 100% of the time, or do you need it to be light enough to sit on your Sony a7 III without feeling like a total brick? Some of these setups are fantastic but get real heavy during an 8-hour wedding day lol. Also, is it important to you that the trigger works with other brands too, or are you staying strictly Sony for the foreseeable future? Just asking because compatibility with that specific hot shoe can be such a headache sometimes!!
Bookmarked, thanks!
If budget isn't a big issue, I'd recommend the Profoto A10 for the ultimate in quality, reliability and integration. But the Godox V1 gets you 90% of the way there for a fraction of the cost. And the Sony HVL-F60RM2, while expensive, pairs perfectly with Sony cameras.
I've been using the Godox V860III-S flash with my Sony a7IV and it's been fantastic. It has built-in radio transmission so you can easily trigger it off-camera. The lithium ion battery provides an impressive number of flashes per charge. And it has nice features like TTL, HSS, and a modeling light. Highly recommend if you want a reliable, feature-rich off-camera flash for Sony.
So I actually switched to the Westcott FJ80 II Universal Touchscreen 80Ws Speedlight last year for my wedding gigs and man, it changed everything. I used to get so frustrated with digging through menus during high-pressure ceremonies, but the touchscreen on this thing is a total lifesaver when you need to swap settings in two seconds flat. The color consistency is just unreal too... like, every shot looks identical even when I am firing off bursts during the first dance. If you are doing weddings, you gotta look at the Westcott FJ-X3 S Wireless Flash Trigger for Sony too. The combo with the a7 III is rock solid and I haven't had a single misfire in months of heavy use. It basically feels like a mini studio light that fits right on your bracket. I love how it handles the heat too, never had it shut down on me even in the middle of a summer outdoor reception! TL;DR: Grab the Westcott FJ80 II Universal Touchscreen 80Ws Speedlight for the insane recycle speeds and the easiest interface you will ever use on a dark dance floor.
