just got my hands on a sony a7 iv and im seriously buzzing because im flying out to italy next month for a destination wedding shoot! i need a dedicated portrait lens but im torn between the sony 85mm f1.8 and that sigma 85mm f1.4 dg dn art everyone talks about.

the sony is super light which is great for hiking around tuscany but i keep staring at the bokeh from the sigma and it looks so creamy. i have about $1000 left in my gear budget after booking flights so price is a factor. is the extra weight of the sigma gonna kill me during a long day or is the image quality just that much better?

Honestly, if youre doing a wedding in Italy, you want that wow factor! Go for the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art without a second thought. Its seriously incredible. Ive used both and while the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 is a fantastic little lens for the money, the Sigma is on a whole different level for professional work. Dont worry about the weight too much tho. Its actually way lighter than the older DSLR version so your neck wont die during those long ceremony shoots! Since you have a $1000 budget, you can easily grab a mint used copy and save like $200 for some amazing pasta and wine while youre out there. The bokeh is just way creamier and itll make those wedding shots look like a million bucks. Trust me, the image quality jump is massive and youll be so glad you went with the f1.4 once you see the files!

Are you shooting video or just stills? Tbh im satisfied with the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 because its autofocus is safer for weddings. Maybe look at the Samyang AF 85mm f1.4 FE II?

Just saw this, are you bringing a backup body? Im very satisfied with the Sony FE 85mm f1.8 for reliability:

  • fast AF
  • very safe Let me know!
