Which portrait prime lens should I buy for the Sony a7R V?

I'm prepping for some Seattle weddings next month and finally got the a7R V but glass choice is stressing me out. I read the Sony 85mm GM is super slow now but then people say the Sigma Art has bad distortion on high-res sensors. My budget is around $1200... which one actually handles the 61MP sensor better?

Unfortunately, the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM is no longer a viable recommendation for high-resolution bodies like the a7R V. I found the autofocus motor to be too sluggish for wedding work, which is quite disappointing for a lens at that price. It simply isnt as good as expected on the newer sensors. Regarding your concerns about the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art Sony E-Mount, the pincushion distortion is definitely present, but it is much easier to correct than the lack of sharpness on older glass. This is the most methodical choice for a 61MP sensor within your budget. If you find the Sigmas distortion too frustrating, looking at the Sony FE 135mm f/1.8 GM might be worth it. It is significantly faster and sharper, tho it often sits slightly above the $1200 mark... but it handles that sensor perfectly.

Just catching up on this thread! I was so worried about picking the wrong lens for my a7R V but honestly you should just go with the Sigma 85mm f1.4 DG DN Art Sony E-Mount. It is absolutely fantastic and way more reliable than the old Sony glass!

  • Sharpness is amazing and actually resolves for that 61MP sensor.
  • Autofocus is super snappy which is a lifesaver for wedding work.
  • In-camera lens profiles fix the distortion perfectly anyway.
  • It fits your budget with room to spare! I love how solid it feels! Dont risk your money on the old GM lens... the Sigma is way more modern and technically superior for the high-res bodies.
