honestly so fed up with my current 85mm it just missed focus three times in a row today and i could've screamed. whats the point of having an a7R V if the glass cant keep up?? its driving me crazy because i have a huge wedding portrait gig in Manhattan next Friday and i seriously cant risk these soft shots anymore.

i need something that can actually handle the 61mp sensor without looking like total mush. my budget is around $1300 but i could stretch it if the quality is there. should i just bite the bullet on the Sony GM or is there a better 3rd party option that wont fail me...

^ This. Also, i tried Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art after my Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM lagged during a studio session.

  • Sigma: superior MTF data
  • Sony: older focus motors

Honestly, i feel that frustration. For a 61mp sensor like the a7R V, you really cant cut corners on the autofocus motors or you just end up with expensive paperweights. If you want to stay under that $1300 mark, the Sigma is basically your best bet for sharpness and reliability. Here are the two I have used most on that body:

  • Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art for Sony E
  • Fast AF, super sharp wide open, and fits your budget perfectly.
  • Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM
  • Beautiful rendering but the AF motor is old tech and feels sluggish compared to newer lenses. Tbh, skip the older Sony GM. The Sigma uses newer motors that actually talk to the a7R V autofocus chip way better than the original Sony glass. It will handle the Manhattan gig just fine without hunting.
