I was out in Chicago last weekend trying to do street shots with my primes and I missed so many moments just fumbling with my gear in the wind. Its driving me crazy. I looked at the Sony 24-70 GM II but I cant drop $2300 before my Tokyo trip next month. My budget is strictly $1200.

I keep seeing the Tamron 28-75 G2 recommended but is 28mm really wide enough for narrow streets? I feel like I'm gonna miss that 24mm edge. I heard the Sigma 24-70 is okay too but some folks say it has major dust issues. I just want one versatile zoom that isnt a total brick, what are you guys actually using?

I am very satisfied with the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Sony E. It handles the 24mm wide-angle requirement perfectly and newer builds have improved weather sealing. If weight is your main metric, the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 is lighter, but 28mm is kinda tight for Tokyo alleys. The Sigma yields superior edge resolution and better contrast in my testing.

Adding my two cents... how much night shooting are you planning for Tokyo tho? If youre mostly hitting the streets during the day, you can save serious cash.

Like someone mentioned, 28mm is kinda tight. Im super happy with the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G tho. It works well:

  • 20mm is better for streets
  • Much lighter weight Honestly, f4 is fine...
