I'm looking to add an 85mm prime lens to my kit for portraits and I shoot with a Sony a7 IV mirrorless camera. There seem to be quite a few good options out there in the 85mm focal length for Sony FE mount, but I'm wondering what you all think is the best one overall when considering factors like sharpness, bokeh, autofocus speed, size/weight, and value.

Here's a comparison of some of the top 85mm lens options for the Sony FE mount, considering factors like sharpness, bokeh, autofocus, size/weight, and value:

  1. Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM

    • Extremely sharp, even wide open at f/1.4
    • Beautiful, creamy bokeh
    • Fast and accurate autofocus
    • Fairly large and heavy (820g)
    • Expensive ($1,798)
  2. Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art

    • Excellent sharpness
    • Pleasing bokeh
    • Fast and quiet autofocus
    • Slightly smaller and lighter than the Sony GM (630g)
    • More affordable ($1,199)
  3. Sony FE 85mm f/1.8

    • Very sharp, especially stopped down
    • Good bokeh quality
    • Fast and accurate autofocus
    • Compact and lightweight (371g)
    • Excellent value ($598)
  4. Samyang AF 85mm f/1.4 FE

    • Sharp, especially in the center
    • Nice bokeh
    • Decent autofocus speed
    • Relatively compact and lightweight (568g)
    • Very affordable ($699)

Overall, the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 offers the best balance of performance and value. It's sharp, focuses quickly, and is very compact and lightweight. If budget is less of a concern, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is an excellent choice, with top-notch sharpness and bokeh at a lower price than the Sony GM.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your specific needs and priorities. If you prioritize absolute best image quality and bokeh, the Sony GM might be worth the premium. But for most users, the Sony f/1.8 or Sigma Art will likely be more than sufficient.
