Hi everyone,

I'm looking to add a high quality 24mm prime lens to my kit for my Sony A7III. I shoot a mix of landscapes, cityscapes, environmental portraits and want a versatile 24mm that delivers excellent sharpness, low distortion and good low light performance. Which is the best 24mm prime lens ?

@Reply #1 - good point! You might want to consider some of the all-metal options if you are worried about long-term reliability. I would suggest looking at the Sigma 24mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary or even the Zeiss Batis 25mm f/2 if you can find one used.

  • Sigma 24mm f/2 DG DN Contemporary - fantastic build quality and the aperture ring feels solid.
  • Viltrox AF 24mm f/1.8 FE - decent optics but be careful with the mount tightness. Make sure to check the weather sealing on the Viltrox tho, as it can be a bit loose. Trekking through the Cascades a few years back really taught me a lesson when my bag wasnt as waterproof as the label claimed. My old 35mm got some internal fungus and it was a total nightmare to get it cleaned. Honestly, I spend more time looking at weather charts than my actual settings these days because I am so paranoid about moisture damage. Anyway, just something to watch out for.

Best 24mm lens ? Of course the Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM and Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG DN Art (much cheaper). And if you are looking for a compact 24mm lens, I suggest u to get the Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G.

Its truly amazing that you are looking for a 24mm! That focal length is absolutely fantastic for cityscapes and environmental portraits, tbh. To ensure we find a reliable option that fits your financial goals perfectly, I need a bit more info:

  • What is the specific maximum budget you have allocated for this lens?
  • Are you prioritizing a fast aperture for low light performance, or is a compact and durable build for travel your primary requirement? Providing these details will help make a safe and cost-effective recommendation!

Below are some good 24mm full frame lens I use:

  1. Sony FE 24mm f/1.4 GM:

    • This lens is considered one of the best in its class. It offers exceptional sharpness, minimal distortion, and beautiful bokeh. The fast f/1.4 aperture makes it ideal for low-light conditions and creative depth of field effects. Autofocus is fast and accurate, making it suitable for various photography genres, including architecture, weddings, and astrophotography.
  2. Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G:

    • If you’re looking for a more compact and lightweight option, the FE 24mm f/2.8 G is a great choice. It delivers excellent image quality, has a silent autofocus system, and is weather-sealed for protection against dust and moisture. It’s versatile for everyday use and travel photography.
  3. Samyang AF 24mm f/1.8 FE:

    • Samyang lenses offer good performance at an affordable price. The 24mm f/1.8 FE provides a wide aperture for creative shots and is suitable for various scenarios, including street photography and environmental portraits.
  4. Tamron 24mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M 1:2:

    • Tamron’s 24mm f/2.8 lens is compact, lightweight, and offers a 1:2 macro capability. It’s a versatile lens for both general photography and close-up shots.
  5. Sigma 24mm f/2 DG DN C:

    • Sigma lenses are known for their optical quality. The 24mm f/2 DG DN provides good sharpness and smooth bokeh. It’s a solid choice for various shooting situations.
