Does anyone have a solid recommendation for an external mic for the Sony ZV-1 because the built-in one is honestly driving me insane? I bought this camera for vlogging my travel trips around Seattle and everyone said the deadcat wind screen it comes with was enough but it just isnt. I was out at the waterfront yesterday trying to film and the wind noise completely drowned out my voice even with the screen on. It sounds so muffled and tinny like I'm underwater or something and I'm just so over it. I spent all this money on a vlogging camera and the audio is the worst part of the whole experience right now.

I need something better before my trip to Japan next month because I cant be dealing with ruined footage again. My budget is around $150 maybe $200 if it's really worth it but I want something that doesnt make the whole setup too bulky since the ZV-1 is supposed to be small and portable. I've been looking at a few options:

  • Rode VideoMicro
  • Sony ECM-G1
  • Maybe a small lavalier?

I heard the VideoMicro picks up weird clicking sounds from the autofocus sometimes and I really want to avoid that. I just need something that actually works in a breeze and doesnt hiss like crazy when its quiet. What are you guys using that actually stays clear when you're walking and talking outside?...

Just saw this thread and honestly feel your pain with the ZV-1 audio. I had high hopes for that built-in capsule too but it is pretty disappointing once you are actually out in the field. Trying the Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone was a bit of a letdown for me, ngl. Like someone mentioned, the cable can actually transmit some of that handling noise and the shock mount is kinda flimsy for travel. It definitely picks up some of that electronic interference and clicking if you arent careful with how the wire sits near the lens. If you are heading to Japan, you are gonna want something more reliable. I moved to the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+200+Directional+On-Camera+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Directional On-Camera Microphone for a while because it has an internal shock mount and built-in wind protection. It is decent, but even then, heavy wind at the Seattle waterfront is a beast. Honestly, the preamps on these small Sony cameras are just kinda noisy, so you really have to keep the in-camera gain low, like around level 3 or 4, or you will get that hiss no matter what mic you plug in. It is frustrating because you buy these things for convenience and then end up fiddling with settings for half an hour. If you want to keep it really portable but clear, maybe look at the Rode Wireless ME Compact Wireless Microphone System. It is right in your budget. I use it when it is too windy for a shotgun mic. You just clip the transmitter to your collar and the deadcat it comes with actually stays on. Since the mic is closer to your mouth, you dont have to crank the camera volume, which helps with that floor hiss. It is not as simple as a plug-in shotgun tho... you gotta remember to charge it. Still, dont let the gear hold you back, you will get it figured out before your trip.

Unfortunately, expensive gear is often not as good as expected. I had issues with reliability before. Just grab the Movo VXR10 Universal Video Microphone. It is cheap and wont fail.

I've been very happy using the Sony ECM-G1 Ultracompact Shotgun Microphone for travel. Since it uses the MI shoe, you avoid that messy 3.5mm preamp hiss.

  • 14.6 mm large-diameter capsule
  • No cables to snag
  • 34g total weight It handles wind way better than the internal array. No complaints about AF motor noise either since the shock mount works well. Honestly it works great for Japan trips.
