Which vlogging grip works best for the Sony ZV-1 camera?

so im honestly at my wits end with this official Sony GP-VPT2BT grip right now. i bought it because every single reviewer on youtube said it was the gold standard for the ZV-1 but it has been nothing but a massive headache since day one. every single time i turn the camera on it feels like a total coin toss whether the bluetooth is actually gonna connect or if im gonna be standing there like a total idiot staring at a pairing screen while the moment i wanted to film just passes me by. it is so incredibly frustrating and i feel like i wasted my money.

i am leaving for this huge two-week trip to japan in literally 12 days—mostly tokyo and kyoto—and i absolutely cannot deal with this thing failing on me while i am trying to vlog. the build quality feels like cheap hollow plastic and the shutter button has this weird lag that drives me crazy. i just want something that works every time without me having to menu dive or reset the connection. i dont even care if its wired at this point honestly... maybe wired is actually better so i dont have to worry about another thing needing a battery or a bluetooth signal? or maybe there is a third party one that doesnt suck and actually feels like it belongs on a nice camera?

i looked at some stuff from SmallRig and Ulanzi but there are way too many options and i dont want to waste more money on junk that breaks after a week. my budget is around $150 tops because i already spent way too much on extra batteries and sd cards for the trip. i need something that feels sturdy and stable because i tend to be a bit rough with my gear when im moving fast through crowds. is anyone else using something better than the standard sony branded one? which vlogging grip actually works best for the sony zv-1 if you want reliability over everything else?

man, i totally feel your pain on this. the exact same thing happened to me right before my sisters wedding last year and it was a total nightmare. being worried about the bluetooth failing during the ceremony sucked, so i just gave up on the official grip entirely. i wanted something i could trust without thinking, so i swapped over to a more manual setup. getting the SmallRig Cage for Sony ZV1 Camera 2938 and pairing it with a SmallRig Tabletop Mini Tripod with Panoramic Ball Head BUT2664 was honestly the best decision for my peace of mind.

  • zero electronic parts so it literally cannot fail or disconnect
  • the metal build is way sturdier than that plastic sony one
  • no batteries to charge or pairing screens to stare at im just so much happier now because i dont have to menu dive anymore. it just works every time. you might lose the remote shutter buttons, but honestly, just pressing the record button on the camera itself is way more reliable than fighting with a signal that hates you. youll be glad to have something solid like this while navigating those tokyo crowds.
