I just got the Sony ZV-1 because I want to start a travel vlog and honestly I am so lost. The camera is great but when I filmed some stuff at the beach yesterday the wind totally ruined it and you could barely hear me talking. People keep saying I need an external mic but I have no idea how they even work or if they need batteries or whatever. Sorry if this is a total beginner thing but I'm just so confused by all the options. I don't want something huge that makes the camera heavy because the whole point of this camera is that it's small.
I really need some help figuring out what to buy before my trip next month to Scotland. Here is what I am looking for:
- under 80 or 90 dollars/pounds because I spent most my money on the camera
- something that stops that annoying wind noise
- something that doesnt need a bunch of settings changed
- it has to fit on top of the ZV-1 without blocking the screen when it flips out
Is there like a specific brand that everyone uses? I saw some stuff about shotgun mics versus wireless ones but I dont really get the difference or why I would pick one over the other. If someone could just tell me the easiest one to get that would be amazing...

I've tried many different setups over the years for travel vlogging, and for a camera as small as the ZV-1, you definitely want to keep it simple. In my experience, shotgun mics are the way to go because they don't require charging or syncing like wireless ones do. You just plug them in and they work. For your budget, you really can't beat the Rode VideoMicro Compact On-Camera Microphone. It's super light and comes with that big furry windshield which is non-negotiable for places like Scotland or the beach. Another solid budget-friendly option I've used is the Movo VXR10 Universal Video Microphone. It's basically a clone of the Rode but usually costs way less, and honestly, the sound quality is nearly identical for vlogging. Both of these fit right on the hot shoe and wont block your flip-out screen. Just make sure you always keep the fuzzy deadcat on when you're outside or the wind will still kill your audio... trust me on that one.

Saw this earlier but just getting around to it. I ruined a coastal trip once because I didn't realize how much wind kills audio. Be careful with cables tho, they wiggle loose sometimes.
- Get a mic with a deadcat (the fuzzy cover) for Scotland.
- The Rode VideoMicro II Ultracompact Shotgun Microphone is light and needs no batteries.
- I would suggest checking the mount height so it doesn't block your screen.
