Ive been shooting with my a6400 for a few years now and usually just lug around my old heavy Manfrotto legs. But im heading to Iceland next month for a solo backpacking trip and realized my current setup is way too bulky for my pack. I usually shoot with the 18-135mm lens so the payload isnt huge but I still need something that wont shake in the wind.

I tried one of those cheap Gorillapods and it was a total disaster—it just kept sagging under the weight. Looking for something carbon fiber maybe? My budget is around $200 and it needs to fit inside a small 20L bag. What compact tripods are you guys using for the a6000 series?

Just saw this now while looking for gear for my own trip. Before I jump in, are you planning on doing long exposures for the Northern Lights or mostly just daytime landscapes? Iceland wind is really no joke when you start doing 10-second exposures and it might change my recommendation on weight. I have been quite satisfied with a few different setups over the last year. I generally look for stuff that hits that $150-220 sweet spot because I dont want to be terrified of losing an expensive tripod in a river.

  • Sirui T-025SK Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with B-00K Ball Head is incredibly compact. It fits inside my smallest hiking pack without any issues. It is plenty strong for an a6400 and that lens, tho it is a bit short when fully extended.
  • Vanguard VEO 3GO 235CB Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod has been a solid performer for me. It feels a bit more rugged and the leg locks are snappy. No complaints about stability here.
  • Ulanzi & COMAN Zero Y Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod is basically the best bang for buck if you can find a sale. Its very stiff for the weight and the design is super modern. Budget-wise, the Sirui usually leaves you some extra cash for filters. Honestly, for a solo backpacking trip where every ounce counts, being able to fit it inside the bag is a game changer. Let me know about the long exposure stuff tho, might change what I'd pick for stability.

A while back I bought a really cheap knockoff carbon fiber one and it was super disappointing... it nearly tipped over with my camera on it during a light breeze. Not a great feeling. For Iceland, the wind is no joke so you definitely need something stable. Unfortunately many travel tripods sacrifice way too much rigidity for weight. Switching to a more reliable brand was necessary because I just couldnt trust the cheap stuff anymore. Here are two I think fit your budget:
