Best external monitor recommendations for Sony FX30 filmmakers?

Honestly, the screen on the FX30 is just too small for my eyes lately. Ive been trying to nail focus on some client shoots here in Chicago and its been a real struggle especially when the sun is actually out. I am looking to grab a solid external monitor before a big documentary project I have starting next month but I am stuck in a bit of a research loop and cant decide which way to go.

I spent hours looking at the Atomos Ninja V because that seems to be the standard choice for everyone, but then I read a bunch of threads saying its overkill if I dont actually need to record ProRes externally. Plus I heard the fan noise might be an issue for my scratch audio if the mic is too close. Then I saw the Portkeys LH5P II which has that cool camera control thing where you can change settings on the FX30 through the monitor, but I have also heard the menu system is kind of a disaster to navigate while youre in a hurry. I just want something reliable that wont break the bank or my arm after carrying it on a gimbal all day.

Here is what I am looking for specifically:

  • Budget is around $400 to $600 max
  • High brightness is a must for outdoor shoots maybe 1500 nits or more
  • Needs to support custom LUTs so I can see what the S-Log3 will actually look like
  • Battery life that doesnt die in 20 minutes on a standard NPF
  • Reliable build quality since I tend to be a bit rough on my gear

I am mostly doing run-and-gun stuff so I dont want a massive 7-inch brick, a 5-inch or 5.5-inch is probably the sweet spot for me. Does anyone have experience with the newer Feelworld or maybe those Shinobi monitors compared to the more expensive brands? Are they actually daylight viewable or is that just marketing talk... I am really worried about getting something cheap that has a huge color shift or weird delay.

I'm super satisfied with the Portkeys LH5P II 5.5 Inch 2200 Nit. It works well because 2200 nits is plenty for outdoor visibility without a hood. The 10-bit processing is accurate enough for monitoring S-Log3 with custom LUTs. I've had no complaints regarding the power consumption on NP-F550s either. Definitely handles the Chicago sun way better than a standard monitor.

Yo! Saw your post and totally get the struggle with that tiny FX30 screen when the sun is blasting. If you want something that feels pro without the Atomos price tag or the annoying fan noise, you seriously need to look at the SmallHD Action 5 5-inch 2000 Nit Brightness Monitor. It is honestly a total game changer for run-and-gun filmmaking! The UI is so much cleaner than those cheaper monitors. It uses a simplified version of their PageOS which is just... amazing. It is super intuitive when you are in a rush and dont want to fiddle with menus. Here is why it rules:

  • 2000 nits is plenty bright. You wont even need a sun hood most of the time.
  • Build quality is fantastic. It feels like a tank compared to those plastic units.
  • Custom LUTs work perfectly. I use it for S-Log3 all the time and it looks spot on.
  • Zero fan noise since it is passively cooled. I also tried the Feelworld LUT5 5.5 Inch 3000 Nit Ultra Bright Monitor and while it is literally like looking at the sun, the colors are a bit off tbh. For client work, you want that accuracy you get with SmallHD. Color shifts on the cheap ones are real and they can be scary if you are trying to match skin tones! Battery life on the Action 5 is pretty solid too, I usually just swap NPFs every few hours and I am good to go. It is super light so your gimbal wont scream at you either! Love how it fits on a small rig.
