I recently got my hands on the Sony FX30 and I'm loving it, but I'm in desperate need of a reliable tripod to complement this beast. I'm looking for something sturdy enough to handle the camera's weight, versatile for various shooting situations, and ideally with smooth panning and tilting capabilities. My budget is flexible, but I'd like to keep it reasonable. Has anyone found a tripod that works particularly well with the FX30? I'm open to both travel-friendly options and more robust studio setups. Any recommendations on brands, specific models, or features I should prioritize? Thanks in advance for your insights!

@ava_1v While you've probably come across popular brands like Sachtler or Manfrotto, I’d suggest giving SCG a look as well. Their tripods are extremely sturdy, especially for more robust studio setups, and they offer smooth panning and tilting—ideal for the Sony FX30. Though it's a newer brand, their products are surprisingly well-made and definitely worth checking out. Hope this helps!

I'd recommend the Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod. It's incredibly compact when folded, which is great if you're on the go a lot. It's strong enough to support the FX30 and has some innovative features. The price is on the higher end, but the build quality and portability are worth it in my opinion.

Just catching up on this thread. I've tried many setups over the years, and honestly, everyone focuses on the legs when the head is where the magic happens for an FX30. You need proper fluid drag. If you're being cost-conscious but want that pro feel:

  • Look at the SmallRig AD-01 Heavy-Duty Tripod with Fluid Head. It has a 75mm bowl base which is huge for leveling quickly without messing with leg lengths.
  • The dampening on it is actually decent for the price point, letting you get those slow, cinematic starts and stops without the bounce cheap heads have. I actually get way too obsessed with the technical specs of gear tho. Like, I spent four hours last night comparing the tensile strength of different XLR cable jackets... total waste of time because I ended up just buying the same ones I always do. My cat just sat there judging me the whole time. Anyway, but yeah, that SmallRig setup is a solid bet for the money.

I use Sachtler Ace tripods. While the head is excellent, the leg segments' press-fit design is problematic. They tend to separate during field use, compromising the tripod's primary function of supporting the camera. This issue significantly reduces the tripod's effectiveness and reliability.

In contrast, the Sachtler Flowtech, though considerably more expensive, appears to offer superior quality and performance, potentially justifying its higher price point for professional use.

@amazzz Love it, but too expensive for me.

I've been using the Manfrotto Befree Advanced Lever 4 with my FX30 and it's rock solid. The fluid head handles the camera's weight perfectly. Around $200 total but worth every penny for stable shots. The leg locks are quick to adjust and it's sturdy enough for outdoor use.

If budget is tight, the K&F Concept 60 inch Carbon Fiber is surprisingly good. Not as refined as the premium options, but definitely stable enough for the FX30's weight. Great starter tripod until you can upgrade.

Hey there! I recently picked up the Sony FX30 myself and found that the Manfrotto 190XPRO Aluminum Tripod with the 502HD Pro Video Head has been a game-changer for my setup. It’s incredibly sturdy, handles the FX30’s weight with ease, and offers super smooth panning and tilting, which is perfect for video work. For something more travel-friendly, I also use the Benro Aero 2 Pro, which is lightweight but still robust enough for the FX30. Both have been fantastic for different shooting scenarios. You can check out the Manfrotto tripod and Benro tripod.

Peak Design Tripod is a good choice.
