Just got a Sony a6400 for my sisters wedding in Vermont next month and I am lowkey panicking about the audio. The internal mic is just not gonna cut it for an outdoor ceremony and I dont want to ruin the video. I spent all night reading about the Rode VideoMicro because its the go-to budget choice but I keep seeing people mention a weird buzzing or hiss specifically when its used with Sony cameras?
Then I saw the Boya BY-MM1 which is way cheaper but I dont know if the quality is actually decent or if it feels like a toy. I really gotta stay under $60 since the camera already blew my budget. Is the Rode hiss a real thing on the a6400 or is there something else better...
You 100% need a mic that has its own power source to kill that hiss! The a6400 preamps are honestly pretty noisy, but if you get a mic with a gain boost, you can turn the camera levels way down to like 1 or 2 and it sounds fantastic. It makes a world of difference for outdoor ceremonies where wind is a factor too!
Like someone mentioned, those noisy preamps are the real killer. If you want to stay under budget, the Saramonic SR-M3 Directional Condenser Microphone is a sleeper hit. It has a +10dB gain switch which lets you turn the camera levels way down to fix that hiss.
The a6400 internal preamp has a high noise floor. Manual levels set to 3 improve the SNR.
