I just got a Sony ZV-E10 because everyone said it was the best for starting out on YouTube but honestly I am so confused by all the different lenses out there. I tried using the one that came in the box but when I hold the camera out to film myself it feels like my face is way too close to the screen and you cant even see the background behind me. I want that look where you can see the scenery while I am talking but I dont know what numbers to look for.

Someone told me I need a wide angle lens but then I saw things like 10-20mm or 11mm or 15mm and I have no idea what the difference is or if they even fit my camera. Its all kind of overwhelming. My budget is probably around $450 or maybe $500 if I stretch it and I am planning a big trip to Japan next month so I really need to figure this out soon before I go.

Is there a specific lens that is easy for a beginner who just wants to walk and talk without it being all shaky or too zoomed in? I keep seeing different brands like Sigma and Tamron too and I dont even know if those work on a Sony camera... what is the best one for just simple vlogging?

Unfortunately, that 500 budget is kinda tight for high-quality wide glass. The kit lens is pretty disappointing because the crop factor ruins your framing. Check these specs:

  • Viltrox AF 13mm f/1.4 STM: Offers a 20mm equivalent field of view. Its fast at f/1.4, tho slightly bulky for a compact setup.
  • Sony E 10-18mm f/4 OSS: Look for a used deal. It has internal stabilization which is vital since your camera lacks IBIS.

The frustration with that kit lens is real. When I first started vlogging with my ZV-E10, I took it on a trip to Kyoto and ended up with nothing but my own forehead in every shot because of that annoying crop factor. See, when you turn on the Active Stabilization to keep things smooth while walking, the camera zooms in even more. It basically ruins the kit lens for vlogging. I finally picked up the Sony E 11mm f/1.8 and honestly its been a total game changer. Im super satisfied with how wide it is... you can finally see the shrines and the crowds behind me without me having to stretch my arm out until it hurts. Sigma and Tamron definitely work on Sony cameras as long as they say E-mount on the box. I actually used the Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for a bit, but for walking and talking, the 11mm is just much easier to manage. My quick tip for Japan is to stick to a prime lens like that Sony 11mm because its tiny and wont weigh you down when youre walking 20k steps a day. Plus, it fits right in your budget. No complaints here, it just works perfectly for that beginner vlog style and stays super smooth.

I'm very satisfied with my setup now but I totally remember that confusion.

  • Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary: I love this for the blurry background, it looks so pro, tho it is a bit heavy.
  • Samyang AF 12mm f/2.0 E: This works well because it's wider and super light for walking around Japan. Basically, lower mm numbers give you that wide look you're after. Both fit Sony cameras perfectly!
