i honestly feel so stupid right now i just bought this new sony zv-e10 ii because everyone on youtube said it was the best for vlogging but i tried it out today and my face takes up the whole screen. like i literally cant even see the background at all even when i stretch my arm out as far as it can go it just looks so awkward and bad and i look way too close. i think i need a different lens? i was looking online and everyone is talking about 11mm or 15mm or something called f-stops and i am just totally lost and overwhelmed by all these numbers and technical stuff. i spent most of my savings on the camera body and i only have maybe 400 or 500 dollars left for a lens and i really need it before i leave for my trip to tokyo in three weeks. is there like one lens that just works for walking and talking? i dont want to carry a bunch of stuff or swap things out constantly because i know ill just drop it or break something. does it have to be a sony lens or can it be another brand like sigma? i really just want that look where you can see me and the street behind me clearly without it being all zoomed in on my nose...

In my experience, you're hitting the 1.5x sensor crop plus the additional crop from the cameras stabilization. I've tested various focal lengths for vlogging over the years and you really need to be wider than 15mm on an APS-C sensor to get that background visibility you're after.

  • Sony E 11mm f/1.8
  • This is likely your best bet. It is compact, fast, and stays right around your 500 dollar budget. It offers a 16.5mm equivalent field of view which is standard for handheld vlogging.
  • Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary
  • A solid zoom alternative if you need more flexibility, though it might be at the very top of your price range. I'd suggest the Sony 11mm for your Tokyo trip. It is wide enough that you wont have to stretch your arm out constantly and the autofocus is seamless. It makes a huge difference in how much scenery people see behind you. Itll definitely save your arm from getting tired while you're walking around.

I totally get the frustration with the crop factor on the ZV-E10 II! Quick technical question for you tho—are you using the Active SteadyShot stabilization setting? That feature adds a massive digital crop on top of the standard 1.5x sensor crop, which basically turns a wide lens into a tight portrait lens instantly! Since you are going to Tokyo and want to see the background, you definitely want a high-performance wide-angle zoom for maximum flexibility without swapping gear.

  • Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary is absolutely fantastic because it is the smallest and lightest ultra-wide zoom for Sony APS-C cameras. The 10mm focal length is crucial for getting that wide perspective even with the electronic stabilization crop!
  • Tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 Di III-A RXD is another stellar choice with incredible sharpness and a constant f/2.8 aperture. That f-stop number is amazing for those low-light neon street shots in Shinjuku at night. Are you planning to use a vlogging grip or just holding the camera body directly? Knowing your physical reach helps determine if 10mm is wide enough for your specific framing style!
