What are the best soundbar options for Sony Bravia TVs?

Which soundbar is actually the gold standard for the newer Sony Bravia sets these days because my current setup is driving me nuts? Ive been a loyal Bravia user for like ten years now and I usually know my way around a home theater setup but this latest upgrade to the XR-A80L has me stumped with some weird audio lag issues. Im trying to figure out if I should just stick with the Sony ecosystem or if something like the Bose 900 or a Samsung Q-series is gonna play nice with the eARC port without giving me that annoying audio out of sync pop-up every five minutes.

I have an older Sonos Arc right now and it was working fine on my old X900H but ever since I swapped to the OLED the CEC handshake is just... broken. Sometimes it doesnt wake up the bar at all and other times the volume control lag is like three seconds behind. Its super frustrating when you just want to watch a movie and you have to reboot the whole system twice. Plus I keep hearing about this Acoustic Center Sync thing where the TV acts as the center channel and I gotta know if its actually worth the hype or if its just a gimmick to sell more Sony hardware like the HT-A7000 or that new Bravia Theater Bar 8 or 9.

Budget is around 1200 or maybe 1500 if the sub is included because I really need that low end punch for my basement setup. I mainly use it for 4K Blu-rays and a bit of PS5 gaming so low latency is a must. Here is what Im looking at right now:

  • Sony HT-A7000 (seems like the safe bet?)
  • The new Bravia Theater Bar 9 (is it really better than the 7000?)
  • Maybe the Samsung Q990C if the compatibility isnt a nightmare

I need to pull the trigger by Friday because I have friends coming over for a Dune marathon and I dont want to be the guy fiddling with settings while everyone is waiting. Has anyone here actually used the Center Sync feature with the newer OLEDs? Does it make the dialogue clearer or does it just sound thin and tinny like most TV speakers? Im really leaning towards staying in-brand just to avoid the headache of two remotes but I dont want to sacrifice sound quality just for a logo...

I've been messing with Bravia setups for years and tbh, those CEC handshake issues usually come down to the Pass Through setting in the TV menus being off. If you're looking for that low-end punch for the Dune marathon, skip the smaller units and go straight for the Sony SA-SW5 300W Wireless Subwoofer. Its a beast in a basement and fills the room way better than the smaller SW3. The Sony Bravia Theater Bar 8 11 Speaker System is the sweet spot if you want to stay in-brand without overspending. Regarding Acoustic Center Sync, it's actually not a gimmick on the OLEDs. Since the A80L uses the screen as a driver, it anchors dialogue to the frame perfectly. It sounds much richer than you'd expect, especially with a beefy sub handling the heavy lifting. Staying in-brand definitely helps with the lag issues too...

@Reply #1 - good point! Just saw this while looking for firmware updates. If you are worried about that Dune marathon, the Samsung HW-Q990C 11.1.4ch Soundbar with Subwoofer and Rear Speakers is actually a powerhouse for the A80L. I have been using it for six months and I am very satisfied with the stability. Here is why it works well for your specific use case:

  • Dedicated HDMI 2.1 ports for the PS5 so you dont lose VRR or 120Hz support.
  • Full uncompressed LPCM support which is huge for those 4K Blu-rays you mentioned.
  • Better sub-bass extension than the standalone Sony HT-A7000 7.1.2ch Soundbar unless you spend extra on the optional SW5 sub. The CEC handshake on the Samsung has been rock solid for me lately. I dont miss the Center Sync because the discrete drivers in a dedicated bar like this provide much better imaging than using the TV panel as a speaker. Its definitely not the nightmare people claim and the latency is basically non-existent.
