I am honestly so stressed out trying to pick something and I feel like I'm going in circles. I finally started this high intensity functional fitness class and I'm also trying to get into running but my current situation is a total disaster. I have these old wired earbuds that I've been using and they are constantly getting tangled in my arms when I'm doing kettlebell swings or they just pop out of my ears the second I start sweating even a little bit. It is so awkward to be in the middle of a crowded gym and have to crawl around on the floor looking for an earbud that fell out while everyone is moving around me. I've heard such good things about Sony and I really want to get a pair that will actually last but looking at all the options is just overwhelming me. I have about $300 saved up which is a lot for me and I'm really nervous about making the wrong choice.

I see people wearing those big bulky headphones in the gym but then I see other people with the tiny ones that go inside your ear and I just dont know which is better for someone who is moving around a lot. I live in Florida and it is incredibly hot and humid right now so I am sweating buckets every time I go for a run. I'm really worried that if I get the big ones the padding will get all soaked and start smelling like a locker room after a week or that the electronics will just break because of the moisture. But then I worry the little ones wont stay in my ears when I'm sprinting or doing box jumps. I saw some called the XM5 and some others called LinkBuds but I dont really understand what the difference is or if they are even waterproof?

I need to get something by this weekend because I have a long training run scheduled for Sunday and I cant face it without music. Sorry if these are really basic questions but I have no idea what I'm doing and I really dont want to waste my savings on something that isnt going to stay on my head or is going to break because of my sweat. Like is there a specific one that people use for this? I'm so confused by all the letters and numbers on the boxes. Which Sony one is actually the best for someone who is doing really intense workouts and running outside in the heat?

Honestly, just saw this post and I gotta tell you... stay away from the big over-ear stuff. I've tried many setups over the years and the Sony WH-1000XM5 Over-Ear Headphones are amazing for a plane, but they have zero water resistance rating. In Florida humidity, the electronics will eventually corrode and that padding is gonna smell like a swamp in two weeks. Total waste of your savings if you're using them for fitness. For high intensity, you need to look at the IPX4 rating specifically. Thats the technical standard for splash and sweat resistance. Here is my take on the options:

  • Sony LinkBuds S Noise Canceling Earbuds: These are basically the sweet spot for runners. They are tiny and light, which is key because weight is what makes buds fly out of your head during box jumps. They handle sweat well and the noise canceling is solid for blocking out gym music.
  • Sony WF-1000XM5 Noise Canceling Earbuds: These are the flagship buds. Better sound quality than the LinkBuds, but they are a bit heavier. Tbh, the foam tips they come with can get kinda gross if you're sweating buckets every day.
  • Sony Float Run Off-Ear Wireless Headphones: These are built specifically for what you're doing. They dont actually go inside the ear canal, so they wont pop out when things get slippery. In my experience, the LinkBuds S are the most reliable choice for a mix of gym and running. They wont feel like they're dragging your ears down when you move. Just wipe them off after Sunday's run so the salt doesnt gunk up the charging pins.

It's honestly a letdown that most flagship models can't handle real sweat. Instead of those expensive ones, look at the Sony WI-C100 Wireless In-Ear Headphones. Since they have a neckband, you won't ever have to crawl on the gym floor looking for a lost bud. They're super affordable, IPX4 rated, and the battery lasts forever. Just a tip: tuck the cord under your shirt so it doesn't snag on those kettlebells.

> I am honestly so stressed out trying to pick something I ruined my first over-ear set in a month because of sweat, ngl. My current buds stay in and dont budge during burpees in this humidity. Go with the smaller ones.
