I've got a 14 hour flight to Tokyo coming up and really need to upgrade. Ive been looking at the Sony WH-1000XM4 and the XM5s but I'm super torn. Everyone says the XM4s are better for travel because they fold up, but then reviewers say the noise canceling on the XM5 is way better for engine drone. Im worried about the headband comfort on the XM5 though for that many hours.

My situation:

  • Budget: under $350
  • Flight: 14 hours each way
  • Use case: sleeping and movies
  • Preference: something that wont make my ears too hot

Which one actually wins for a long haul like this?

Late to the thread, but looking at the hard specs is key here. To add to the point above: the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones uses an 8-microphone array plus two processors, which technically outperforms the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones for high-frequency isolation. In my experience, the XM5 handles the cabin pressure shifts way better too. Heres a couple quick tips for the flight:

  • Use the wired connection. It bypasses the Bluetooth radio and saves battery, plus no lag for movies.
  • If you are worried about heat, look into Dekoni Audio Choice Suede Replacement Pads for Sony WH-1000XM5. Stock pleather gets swampy after 5 hours, but suede stays cool. The XM5 usually hits that $320 mark on sale, so it fits your budget. Its worth the extra cash for the better DSP alone tbh.

Honestly, I have done that exact flight to Tokyo and you 100% want the Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Noise Canceling Over-Ear Headphones! These things are basically still the king of travel in my book, seriously... the folding design is a total game changer when you're trying to save space in a carry-on. While the Sony WH-1000XM5 Wireless Noise Canceling Headphones are technically newer, the XM4 is way more comfortable for sleeping. The headband is wider so it doesnt dig in as much during those brutal 14-hour stretches. Plus, you can usually find them for way under your $350 budget, sometimes as low as $250 on sale! The noise canceling is still amazing and handles engine drone like a pro. Tbh, you're gonna have such a fantastic trip! Hit me up if you need any other flight tips or whatever!

I used to get bad ear fatigue until I swapped to Bose for my long hauls! The way they handle the acoustic seal and active cancellation is amazing. It made my last 14 hour flight actually bearable. Just get any of their premium over-ear sets, you cant go wrong. They breathe so much better than others and the microphone processing is top tier!
