Ive been using this old turtle beach set for like three years now and my discord friends are literally bullying me because they cant hear my callouts in val anymore. Apparently i sound like im underwater or something lol. I finally saved up about 300 bucks to get something decent and i really want to stick with sony because i love their sound profile for music too.
I did some digging and everyone keeps talking about the WH-1000XM5s but then i saw a bunch of reddit threads saying the mic quality drops to like 1990s telephone quality as soon as you open a game on PC because of some bluetooth bandwidth thing. That sounds like a nightmare for competitive stuff. Then i looked at the Inzone H9 which is actually made for gaming but some reviews say the noise canceling is way worse than the XM series and the build feels kinda plasticky for that much money. I play a lot of competitive shooters where footstep audio is basically everything so im stressed about picking the wrong one and being stuck with it since I need this by next weekend for a small local tournament.
Is there a specific model that actually balances the mic and the spatial audio for gaming without being a total letdown in one department? Or should i just get a separate mic and use the XM5s... but that feels like a lot of extra cables on my desk and i move around a lot. What are you guys using for sweaty matches?
Quick reply while I have a sec. In my experience, if you want the best spatial awareness for shooters like Val, you should actually check out the Sony Pulse Elite Wireless Headset with Planar Magnetic Drivers. I've tried many headsets over the years and the planar drivers in those give much better detail for footsteps than the standard dynamic drivers in the XM5 or H9. They use a proprietary 2.4GHz link so you avoid the Bluetooth bandwidth bottleneck entirely... no more 1990s telephone mic quality lol. ^ This. Also, the Sony Inzone H5 Wireless Gaming Headset with 2.4GHz Connection is a solid practical pick if you want to save money. It's way lighter than the H9 which helps during long tournament grinds. It doesn't have the active noise canceling, but the boom mic is tuned specifically for voice clarity. Since you have a 300 dollar budget, you could grab the Elite or the H5 and still have plenty of cash left over. Just make sure you use the USB dongle for the tournament so you dont get lag!
Unfortunately, I have had issues with Sony wireless gear for competitive gaming. The compression you're worried about is a real technical flaw and quite disappointing...
Stick to the Inzone line for competitive play. Bluetooth is a disaster for Windows gaming because of that bandwidth issue you found.
