I finally snagged an FX3 and I'm so hyped to use it for a travel doc in Iceland next month! I've got about $800 left for extras and I'm totally stuck between two setups.
Option one is grabbing a DJI RS 3 Mini because I love those smooth moving shots but option two is just rigging it out with the SmallRig Black Mamba cage and a couple 99Wh V-mount batteries. Since I'll be hiking a lot I need to stay light but I'm worried about battery life in the cold weather vs having a gimbal.
Which one is more of an essential "must have" for a solo shooter like me?
coming back to this and tbh im kinda disappointed nobody mentioned media or filters yet. i had a really rough time in the rockies last year when my cheaper cards just stopped recording because of the cold... it was a total disaster. the fx3 is a beast but it eats data like crazy and the internal screen is honestly pretty bad for judging exposure in bright snow. you really need specific stuff to handle the icelandic glare and high bitrates.
Iceland is brutal on gear! Honestly forget the gimbal for hiking, the cold kills those tiny internal batteries instantly. Id grab the SmallRig Black Mamba Camera Cage for Sony FX3 and a couple SmallRig VB99 Pro V Mount Battery 99Wh instead. Those V-mounts are amazing because they handle sub-zero voltage drop way better than stock cells... FX3 active IBIS is basically magic for handheld stuff tho!
