What are the absolute must-have accessories for the Sony FX3 because honestly I'm about to lose my mind with this thing. I just dropped a ton of cash on the body thinking it would be my dream setup for a documentary im shooting in Chicago next month but right now its just a total headache. Like why is the screen so small? I cant see if anything is actually in focus when im outside and the glare is driving me crazy. I tried using it for a test shoot yesterday and the battery was dead before I even finished the second interview setup which is just ridiculous for a camera at this price point.
I really need to know what you guys are using to make this thing actually functional for a full day of shooting. Im looking at monitors but there are a million options and I dont want to buy more junk that doesnt work. Do I need a full cage? The top handle it comes with feels kinda flimsy when I put a decent mic on it and I feel like the whole thing is gonna snap if I move too fast. Also what are people doing for power because swapping these tiny batteries every forty minutes is not gonna work for me.
I have about 1500 left in my budget for the month to get this rigged up before we start principal photography and I really dont want to waste it on stuff I dont need. Im mostly doing run and gun stuff, lots of handheld, so it needs to be somewhat light but actually usable. Honestly im just frustrated because for four grand I expected more than a paperweight that needs ten extra parts to actually work properly.
I feel like I'm building a lego set instead of a camera rig and my deadline is creeping up fast...
To add to the point above: I actually disagree about skipping the cage! I did a doc in freezing Chicago and the Tilta Sony FX3 Full Camera Cage Black saved my gear when I slipped on ice. Comparing monitors, the Atomos Ninja V 5-inch 1000nit HDR Monitor is amazing for the price, but the SmallHD Ultra 5 3000nit Touchscreen Monitor is a total technical beast outdoors! TL;DR: Tilta cage + Ninja V hits that budget sweet spot.
I totally get that frustration. When I first got my FX3, I felt like I was holding a toy. For the glare, I’ve been super happy with the FeelWorld LUT6 6-inch 2600nit HDR Monitor. It's a lifesaver outdoors and way cheaper than the high-end brands. I was doing a doc last summer and this thing was the only reason I could actually see focus in the sun. For power, I run a SmallRig VB50 mini V-Mount Battery on a small plate. It’s tiny but keeps me going all day without adding a brick to my rig. You definitely need a cage, mostly to mount everything safely. I picked up the SmallRig Sony FX3 / FX30 Cage Kit on sale and it's been rock solid for me. Honestly, just tighten the screws on the stock handle and save your cash for extra media.
Just saw this. You might want to be really careful with those power solutions. I learned the hard way that cheap d-tap cables can fry internal boards if they arent regulated properly. Also, watch out for those cages. They add weight fast and some actually block the fan exhaust which causes overheating... just be careful because those handle pins can bend if you're too rough.
