I finally pulled the trigger on the Sony a7R V, and while the 61MP resolution is absolutely stunning, my current memory cards are struggling to keep up with these massive file sizes. I’ve been shooting mostly uncompressed RAW, and the buffer lag is becoming a real bottleneck, especially when I’m trying to capture quick bursts during wildlife shoots.

I’m trying to decide if I should bite the bullet and invest in CFexpress Type A cards or if top-tier UHS-II SD cards (like the V90 series) are sufficient for most scenarios. I’ve looked at the Sony Tough cards, but they’re quite a bit pricier than the ProGrade or Lexar alternatives. Also, since I’m starting to explore some 8K video recording, I’m worried about write speeds and potential overheating during long sessions.

I really want to maximize the performance of this camera without overspending on speed I might not actually notice in day-to-day landscape work. For those of you who have been using the a7R V for a while, do you find the CFexpress Type A cards essential for clearing that high-res buffer quickly, or have you had a reliable experience with specific V90 SD cards? Looking for the best balance of speed and reliability for professional use!

be careful, SDs might fail on 8K! In my experience:
- CFexpress: fast
- V90: cheap
idk, i'd basically suggest CFexpress for bursts, tho V90's pretty fine for landscapes.

Building on the earlier suggestion, Ive spent the last few months really putting my setup through its paces to see what actually makes a difference in the field. Im honestly very happy with how the camera performs now that Ive upgraded the media.

  • Buffer clearing is the biggest technical win. With the faster cards, my buffer clears almost instantly even after a long burst of uncompressed raws.
  • Heat management seems better. I noticed my camera doesnt get as warm during 8K clips compared to when I was pushing my older v90 cards to their limit.
  • The reliability during high-bitrate recording has been flawless. I havent had a single dropped frame or write error since making the jump. I initially tried to get away with just the standard cards to save money, but the frustration of waiting for that red light to stop blinking was too much. For me, the technical advantages in data handling and thermal performance made it a necessary move for professional work. No complaints so far, it just works well.
