I seriously need to figure out this card situation before this weekend. I'm shooting a big multi-day event in Seattle starting Friday and my current V90 cards are just not cutting it anymore for the a1's burst rate... it keeps locking up while the buffer clears and its driving me crazy. I've been looking at the Sony Tough cards because they seem like the gold standard but man $400 for a 160gb card is just robbery. I saw the ProGrade ones are a bit cheaper but then I read a few forum posts saying they get super hot and might cause the a7S III to shut down during long 4K 120p clips. Is that actually a thing or just people being dramatic? I also saw some newer brands like Pergear or Exascend but I dont know if I can trust my clients data to a brand I barely heard of a year ago.

My requirements are:

  • Must be available for overnight shipping to WA
  • Budget is around $350-400 max per card (need two)
  • Need at least 160GB capacity because 80GB is a joke for video
  • Reliable for 4k 120p and 30fps bursts on the a1

I'm honestly panicked because I cant afford for these to fail mid-ceremony but I also cant afford to spend a grand on just storage right now... what are you guys actually using in the field?

@Reply #1 - good point! I actually took a gamble on a few Pergear CFexpress Type A 260GB cards a few months back and ive been super satisfied. Being nervous about a smaller brand is normal, but honestly, theyve handled every 30fps burst on my a1 without even getting that warm. The extra capacity for the price is massive when youre shooting 4k 120p all day. They definitely saved me a ton of cash.

Just seeing this... are you shooting those 4k 120p clips for long stretches or just short bursts? That changes the heat risk big time. Technical bits to check:

Honestly, I went through this same panic last year. I settled on ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type A for my a1 and havent looked back since. People definitely exaggerate the heat thing, so dont let that scare you off.

  • they keep up with 30fps bursts easily
  • much better value than the Sony ones
  • reliable for long video takes Just get any of the cards from ProGrade and youll be fine for the event. Good luck in Seattle!
