I just splurged on this Sony a7R V for a trip to Glacier National Park next month but honestly I have no idea what I am doing yet. I spent almost my whole budget on the body and one lens so I only have like 500 dollars left for extras.
Everyone keeps talking about filters and tripods and fast memory cards but there are so many options and I dont want to buy the wrong thing. Since the camera has so many megapixels do I need special gear to make the photos actually look sharp? Sorry if this is a dumb question but what are the absolute must-have accessories for landscape shots that I should get...
Honestly man, that 61-megapixel sensor is a beast but it's super picky about camera shake. If you want those shots to actually look sharp, you gotta get a decent tripod. Handholding at that resolution shows every tiny bit of blur. I've been really happy with the Benro Mach3 2 Series Aluminum Tripod TMA27A for my hiking trips. It's solid enough for the wind but wont break your bank. For storage, dont feel like you need those super expensive CFexpress cards. Since you're doing landscapes and not fast action, a couple of Sony SF-M Series Tough V60 128GB SDXC cards work well. I've used them for months with no complaints, they handle the big files just fine. Also, grab a Hoya 77mm NXT Plus Circular Polarizer Filter to cut glare on the lakes in Glacier. It makes a huge difference in the colors of water and sky. Youll still have cash left over too. Let me know if you need help picking a bag or anything else tho.
Been thinking about your setup and honestly, that sensor is a beast but it's unforgiving. I would suggest looking into an L-bracket. It keeps the camera weight centered over the ball head when shooting vertical, which is huge for stability and keeping things sharp. You might want to consider the SmallRig L-Bracket for Sony A7R V 3669 because it's cheap and fits the body well, though the finish is a bit basic. Compare that to the Really Right Stuff L-Plate for Sony a7R V which is the gold standard for precision but honestly costs way more. Check the Fred Miranda forums for diffraction limit threads. Shooting at f/16 might actually make your shots softer on that body. Use a JJC Wired Remote Shutter Release S2 or the phone app to fire the shutter. Touching the camera at 61MP during a landscape shot is basically a recipe for blur... just be careful out there.
