Just upgraded to the Sony a7 IV and need advice on memory cards. The dual slots accept CFexpress Type A and SD UHS-II, but the price difference is huge.
I mainly shoot 4K video (sometimes 10-bit) and occasional bursts of RAW photos. Is the speed of CFexpress worth the premium cost, or would a good SD UHS-II card suffice?
Budget is around $150-200 for one card. Any specific brand recommendations with good reliability? Concerned about buffer clearing times and recording limits.
Thanks!
CFexpress Type A is worth every penny if you're serious about video work. The buffer clearing is night and day compared to even the fastest SD cards.
I've been using my a7 IV for about a year now, and honestly, a good SD UHS-II card is plenty for most shooting. I use the SanDisk Extreme PRO UHS-II V90 SD card and have zero issues with 4K video or burst shooting. The CFexpress Type A cards are blazing fast but unless you're shooting those long 10-bit 4K sequences constantly, it's hard to justify the cost difference. Save your money for glass!
Bump - same question here
Whatever you do, don't cheap out on cards for the a7 IV. I learned this the hard way with a budget UHS-II card that corrupted during a wedding shoot. For your budget, look at the Angelbird AV PRO SD cards - they're around $150 for 128GB and perform almost as well as CFexpress for most real-world scenarios. Incredibly reliable too.
