Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to the Sony a7 IV after saving up for months. Coming from an older DSLR system, I’m honestly a bit overwhelmed by all the new tech packed into this mirrorless body. I’ve already got a basic lens to get me started, but I want to make sure I’m setting myself up for success without wasting money on junk gear.
I’ve been looking into the dual card slots—should I invest in a CFexpress Type A card right away for that faster buffer, or are high-speed V60/V90 SD cards enough for general hybrid use? I also noticed the NP-FZ100 batteries are beefy, but would you recommend sticking to Sony originals or are there reliable third-party brands you trust? Since it’s a fully articulating screen, I’m also a bit paranoid about scratches, so a solid screen protector recommendation would be amazing.
I’m mostly planning on doing a mix of travel photography and some light 4K video work, and my budget for accessories is around $400 for now. Beyond the obvious things like a bag, what are the absolute 'day one' essentials that every a7 IV owner should have in their kit to get the most out of this camera? Looking forward to hearing what’s worked for you guys!
yo, dont risk it with cheap batteries. unfortunately, i had issues with third-party ones swelling up in the past... it basically ruined my day. stick to the originals:
• Sony NP-FZ100 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Pack
• Sony SF-M Series Tough 128GB UHS-II SDXC Memory Card - plenty fast for most 4K
• Sony PCK-LG2 Glass Screen Protector - cuz that screen is highkey fragile!!
gl!
Ok so, before I give advice, what kind of 4K settings are you actually planning to use? Like, are you doing 4K60 10-bit or just casual clips? I wasted money on cards that failed during a shoot, so honestly, it depends on the bitrate. Kingston Canvas React Plus 128GB UHS-II SDXC is a killer alternative to the Sony ones. Basically, if you aren't doing S&Q slow-mo, you probably dont need CFexpress yet.
For your situation, skip CFexpress Type A. It’s way too pricey for a $400 budget. Unfortunately, I had issues with expensive gear before that just wasnt worth it for travel. Just get a ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold 256GB card. It handles 4K fine and saves u tons. For the screen, ULBTER a7 IV Tempered Glass Screen Protector is cheap and solid. Stick to Sony batteries tho, clones were not as good as expected. gl!!
Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
ngl i am in the exact same boat as you right now. i just picked up my a7 IV last week and i have been staring at different accessory lists for days but i am still paralyzed by choice because i am terrified of buying something that fails while i am out in the field. its so frustrating trying to figure out what is actually reliable for long term use without breaking the bank right away... been researching for weeks and still dont feel 100% sure. quick question though, what kind of environments are you planning to travel to? like are we talking humid tropical spots or somewhere really cold? i am trying to gauge if certain gear holds up better in specific conditions before i pull the trigger on anything myself because reliability is basically my top priority too.
Any updates on this?
