Best high-speed CFexpress Type A cards for Sony a7R V?

Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony a7R V, and while the 61MP sensor is absolutely incredible, I’m quickly realizing that my old UHS-II SD cards are becoming a major bottleneck. When I’m shooting uncompressed RAW bursts, the buffer takes forever to clear, and I really want to start experimenting with the 8K video and those high-bitrate S&Q modes without hitting any write-speed walls.

I’ve been looking into CFexpress Type A cards, but the price-to-storage ratio is definitely a bit steep compared to Type B. I’m trying to decide between the classic Sony Tough series and the ProGrade Digital Cobalt cards, but I’ve also seen some newer options from brands like Lexar and even Exascend that seem promising. Reliability is my top priority because I can't afford a card failure during a shoot, but I’d also love to find a balance between high capacity and fast sustained write speeds.

For those of you already shooting with the a7R V, which cards have you found to be the most reliable for clearing the buffer quickly? Are the higher-capacity 320GB or 640GB cards worth the investment, or should I stick to multiple smaller cards? I'd love to hear your real-world experiences before I drop a few hundred dollars!

Seconding the recommendation above! tbh the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type A Card Gold Series 320GB is ROCK solid for 8K... better sustained speeds than Sony for the price, right?

Oh man, I totally feel u on that 61MP sensor buffer struggle... it's literally insane how fast those SD cards hit a wall! Honestly, since reliability is ur top priority, I'd play it safe. I've been using the Sony CEA-G160T 160GB CFexpress Type A and it's been rock solid for everything, but the capacity is kinda small for 8K video. I was super nervous about third-party brands, but the ProGrade Digital 320GB CFexpress Type A Cobalt has been AMAZING and basically never fails me during long bursts. If u can swing the cash, the Sony CEA-G640T 640GB CFexpress Type A is DEFINITELY the best investment for the a7R V so u don't have to swap cards mid-shoot tho. Stick to Sony or ProGrade for now cuz losing data on those huge files would be a total nightmare... gl!

Ugh, I have been dealing with this exact same headache for months and I am still no closer to a final decision. I have bounced between the big name brands like Sony and Lexar trying to find something that doesn't choke during a long shoot, but honestly, I still feel stuck. Even after years of shooting professionally, this specific camera is the first one that has me constantly second-guessing my storage choices... it is just so frustrating that there is no clear winner yet when it comes to long-term reliability vs price.
