I really need to know what the absolute best external mic for the Sony ZV-1 is before I head out on Tuesday. I'm filming a travel series in Kyoto and I'm freaking out because I still havent picked one. I saw the Rode VideoMic GO II recommended everywhere but I'm worried about it blocking the flip out screen since the ZV-1 is so tiny. Then I found the Sony ECM-G1 which looks perfect because no cables but some people online say the audio quality is kind of mid for the price. I have about $200 to spend and I need to order this tonight so it gets here in time. Is the Sony digital shoe thing actually worth it or should I just stick with a traditional shotgun mic?

@Reply #1 - good point! Be careful, cables blocked my screen in Tokyo.

Saw this just now and hope you haven't pulled the trigger yet because Kyoto wind is a total beast. I spent weeks filming around Gion and the Kamo River and let me tell you, if your mic doesn't have a solid deadcat, your audio is gonna be trash. The ECM-G1 is honestly too basic for a travel series. It sounds barely better than the internal mic when you're actually out in the elements. If you can squeeze an extra few bucks out of your budget, I would suggest the Sony ECM-B10 Compact Digital Shotgun Microphone. It is digital, so no cables to mess with your screen, and the noise floor is way lower than anything using that 3.5mm jack. I once lost a whole day of footage in Arashiyama because my cable jiggled loose and I didnt notice till dinner. Switching to the digital shoe mics literally saved my sanity. Make sure to watch out for these things before you fly out:

  • Check the mounting screw on the shoe every morning because they rattle loose when you're walking 20k steps a day.
  • Keep your internal camera gain low, usually around 3 or 5, to avoid that annoying hiss in quiet temples.
  • If you go cheaper, get the Deity V-Mic D4 Mobile Shotgun Microphone since the output jack is on the side, keeping it away from your flip screen. Just be careful with the tiny switches on the back of the Sony mics, they're easy to bump when you're stuffing the camera into a bag constantly... nothing worse than realizing you've been on the wrong pickup pattern all day.

I used to carry cables for my Japan trips but honestly, one snagged on my gear once and killed the audio port. It was a nightmare. Stick with the official Sony brand stuff if you want reliability.

  • Digital shoe mics are safer because no cables.
  • Less chance of losing audio mid-shot. Just grab any of the Sony branded shotgun mics. You really cant go wrong with the build quality for a big trip.
