So I finally swapped my a7R IV for the a7C II because I wanted to go smaller for street stuff but now the flash situation is a headache. My logic was that any small speedlite would do but the balance is just off on this tiny body. I looked at the Sony HVL-F28RM but it feels pricey and the Godox V350S might be top-heavy for my Tokyo trip next month. I need something low profile that wont make the kit feel like a brick.
Budget is around 200 bucks. I just want something that doesnt scream I HAVE A CAMERA during night street sessions. What are you guys using?
honestly finding a solid flash for the a7C II has been pretty disappointing for me too. i picked up the Godox V350S Li-ion TTL Flash thinking it was the answer but unfortunately it just felt clumsy and top-heavy on such a small body... not as good as expected for agile street shooting. the Sony HVL-F28RM External Flash is okay but honestly that price tag for such basic features is a total letdown. i eventually tried the Sony HVL-F20M Compact External Flash which is way more low-profile. it has reliable TTL but recycle times are unfortunately kinda slow if you are firing off bursts. it fits in a pocket though which is nice. quick tip: keep your flash exposure compensation at -1 or -2 for street shots. it keeps that gritty night vibe without making it look like a crime scene photo. lmk if you want more details on the street settings i use.
I've used plenty of units over the years. The Nissin i400 for Sony is a tank compared to the Meike MK-320S TTL Flash. It recycles faster and the TTL is actually reliable.
^ This. Also, the Sony HVL-F20M External Flash is fantastic! It remains extremely low profile by folding flat. Excellent TTL performance. Fits the budget. TL;DR: Best professional sleek option for street photography.
Re: "I've used plenty of units over the years...." - honestly i totally get why folks love those older units but i worry about the long-term reliability of used gear when you're hitting the streets hard in a place like Tokyo! while the f20m is a classic, i actually think you should skip the traditional speedlite shape entirely for the a7C II. I’ve been using the LightPix Labs FlashQ X20 for Sony and it is absolutely fantastic for keeping a low profile! It’s basically a tiny little cube that doesn't feel like it's going to snap your hot shoe off if you accidentally bump into someone in a crowded alley. I am all about gear safety and this thing feels way more secure than a top-heavy flash. Here is why it wins for me:
