Which external flash works best with the Sony a7R VI system?

Look I am honestly about to lose my mind trying to find a reliable flash for this camera. I just upgraded to the a7R VI and I have got a huge wedding gig coming up in downtown Chicago in three weeks and I still havent settled on a lighting setup. The camera is incredible obviously but the flash situation is a total mess. I spent like four hours last night reading forums and watching reviews and I feel way more lost than when I started.

I looked at the Sony HVL-F60RM2 because obviously you want to stay in the ecosystem for the best autofocus assist and all that but then I see all these people complaining that it overheats way too fast if you are doing any kind of burst shooting during a ceremony. Like why am I paying nearly six hundred bucks for something that shuts down when I need it most? Then everyone says just get the Godox V1 or the V1Pro because it has the round head and its cheaper but then I read these horror stories about the plastic hot shoe foot snapping off or the TTL being super inconsistent with Sony bodies specifically. I cant have the flash fail on me in the middle of the first dance because the pins didnt line up right or the build quality is trash.

Here is what I am dealing with:

  • Budget is around $800 max but I really dont want to spend that if I dont have to.
  • Need something that wont overheat after 20 shots because the reception is gonna be fast paced.
  • Must have a reliable AF assist beam that actually works with the Sony mirrorless system.
  • Needs to be portable enough for me to run around a crowded venue.

Is there like a middle ground I am missing? Maybe a different brand like Westcott or something? I looked at Profoto but the A10 is way out of my price range and I heard their Sony integration is still finicky anyway. I just need something that isnt gonna break or stop working when the room gets warm. Does anyone actually use the a7R VI with a specific setup that doesnt drive them crazy? I feel like I am chasing my tail here...

To add to the point above: unfortunately Sony native flashes are a massive letdown for the price tag. Ive had way too many overheating issues with them during ceremonies. If you want something that actually survives a wedding without breaking the bank, look at the Nissin MG80 Pro High-Performance Flash. It uses a quartz tube to handle heavy bursts way better than the V1. Its a bit of a tank, but super reliable for the price.

I have been shooting weddings for a while and honestly, the flash struggle on Sony is real. For your a7R VI setup, the Godox V1Pro S Sony TTL Flash is probably the most logical choice right now. Godox fixed the major complaints from the original version, specifically the overheating and the flimsy plastic shoe. It has a metal foot now and can handle high-volume shooting without locking up. If you want something that feels a bit more pro without hitting Profoto prices, the Westcott FJ80 II M 80Ws Universal Speedlight is a great alternative. It has a much better touchscreen and the thermal management is solid. Just keep in mind that most modern Sony mirrorless bodies struggle to use the IR AF assist beams found on third-party flashes anyway... they usually rely on the cameras own AF lamp or the sensor itself. Either of these will save you a lot of headache compared to the Sony HVL-F60RM2 Radio Flash.
