I recently upgraded to the Sony a7 IV and need a solid 'one-lens' solution for travel and daily shooting. I’m torn between the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II for the speed and the 24-105mm f/4 for the extra reach. Is the weight trade-off worth the f/2.8 aperture? What’s your go-to versatile zoom for this body?
yo, I swapped my f/4 for the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II.
1. Honestly, 695g works well.
2. f/2.8 XD motors are faster.
Lesson: I'm happy speed beats extra reach!
This^ Also wanted to add that Sony prices are unfortunately crazy. After 15 years shooting, I'd grab Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art for Sony E for $1,099. Best budget f/2.8 glass tho.
Works great for me
Ok so, basically picking a zoom is all about that trade-off between reach and light. I mean, on a high-res body like yours, you really see the difference in glass quality. Honestly, I've used both types and it's a tough call, but here is my take. The f/4 lens is killer for travel cuz of that extra reach—it lowkey saves you from swapping lenses constantly. But if ur shooting at night or want that blurry background, f/4 can feel a bit limiting. I mean, been there, done that. I eventually swapped to the faster f/2.8 version because it's actually super light now. Seriously, the weight isn't the dealbreaker it used to be! For me, the speed is 100% worth it for the extra versatility in low light. I’d say go for the faster one, you wont regret it when the sun goes down. anyway gl!
