Hey everyone! I recently upgraded to the Sony FX3 for my production work, and I'm absolutely loving the sensor and the internal workflow so far. However, I’m currently looking to round out my kit with a high-quality wide-angle lens specifically tailored for professional video.

I do a mix of high-end real estate walkthroughs and lifestyle commercial projects, so I need something that stays sharp edge-to-edge but also handles flares gracefully. I’ve been eyeing the Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II because of the incredible autofocus and versatility, but the price tag is definitely a bit steep. I'm also considering whether a fast prime, like the Sony 20mm f/1.8 G, might be a smarter choice for gimbal work since it’s significantly lighter and easier to balance on my DJI RS3 Pro.

My biggest concerns are focus breathing and how well the lens plays with the FX3’s Active Stabilization. I’ve seen some third-party lenses struggle a bit with the AF-C in 4K 120p, which is a dealbreaker for me. For those of you shooting professionally on the FX3, what’s your go-to wide-angle setup? Would you recommend sticking with native G-Master glass for the reliability, or is there a third-party gem like the Sigma 14-24mm that I'm overlooking?

Oh man, i feel u!! I've been shooting for years and native glass is basically a must for that 120p AF tho.

- Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II: It's amazing and the breathing compensation is literally magic!
- Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G: Lowkey my fav for gimbals cuz it's sooo light...

I guess the prime is easier to balance?? idk but gl!

I went through this exact same struggle last year when I first grabbed my FX3!! I was staring at that Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II and while it’s literally the dream lens, $2,300 is a massive pill to swallow when you’re also buying v-mounts and cages.

I ended up grabbing a Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G for around $800 instead, and honestly? No regrets. I do tons of real estate too and found that for gimbal work on my RS3, the lighter weight actually saved my back on long shoot days. Plus, the 120p AF is rock solid cuz it’s native. I also toyed with the Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary since it’s only $900, but I really missed the internal breathing compensation. Tbh, starting with the 20mm G was the smartest budget move I made... it's amazing value. gl

Tbh I spent way too much time testing the technical communication protocols between these bodies and lenses for a big commercial gig last year. While the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG DN Art has incredible optics for the price, it simply lacks the XD linear motors that provide that frame-perfect 120p tracking you need on the FX3. I actually moved away from the heavy zooms and landed on the Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 PZ G for most of my real estate walkthroughs. Even tho its an f/4, the internal power zoom means the center of gravity never shifts on my DJI RS 3 Pro, making it way more stable than the Sigma 16-28mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary which extends physically. Plus, since its native G glass, it fully supports the FX3 internal breathing compensation and the zoom rocker on the camera body. If youre doing high-end video, having that electronic integration for smooth focal length changes is a game changer compared to manual rings. Definitely dont sleep on the PZ just because of the f/4 aperture, especially for real estate where youre usually stopped down anyway.

Exactly what I was thinking

To add to the point above: it really sounds like native glass is the absolute way to go for the FX3 if you are doing high-end work! From what everyone is saying, it seems like:

  • Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II is the king if you can afford the price tag
  • Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G is the gimbal goat for weight and price
  • Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 PZ G is the sleeper pick for those smooth real estate zooms I am definitely leaning towards the native glass too... I think I heard somewhere that the third-party ones still have some weird micro-jitters in AF-C at high frame rates?? Not totally sure tho but it would drive me crazy! For a DIY setup, that 20mm prime sounds like a total dream for the weight alone. Honestly love how much lighter a gimbal feels when you arent fighting a massive zoom lens all day lol. It is amazing how much of a difference that makes for long shoots! Good luck with the choice, it is a tough one but you basically cant lose with these picks.
