I recently purchased the Sony a7 IV and I'm looking to get into macro photography. What macro lenses would you recommend for this camera? I'd like something sharp with good working distance. Budget is flexible for the right lens. Thanks in advance!

Hi there! Choosing the right macro lens for your Sony a7 IV can make a huge difference in your close-up and macro photography. After testing out several options, here is my top pick:

Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS

  • Razor sharp from edge to edge
  • Built-in optical stabilization
  • Floating focus mechanism for consistent quality at all distances
  • Dust and moisture resistant
  • Fast f/2.8 aperture

FE 90mm macro is best.

Another great option is the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 DG DN Macro Art lens. This third-party lens is designed specifically for Sony E-mount cameras and offers:

  1. 1:1 magnification for true macro capabilities
  2. A robust, weather-sealed construction for shooting in various conditions
  3. Fast and accurate autofocus performance
  4. Exceptional sharpness and color rendition
  5. A more affordable price point compared to Sony's native macro lenses

Don't overlook the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO. It's a manual focus lens, but it offers 2:1 magnification, which is great if you want to get really close to tiny subjects. The image quality is excellent, and it's reasonably priced.

If you're on a budget, consider the Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO. It's manual focus only, but the image quality is excellent and you get 2:1 magnification instead of the usual 1:1. Great option if you don't mind manual focusing and want to save some money.

The Sony 50mm macro delivers exceptional sharpness. Despite slower autofocus, its focal length and affordable price make it an excellent value.

Laowa offers professional-grade results at affordable prices, with all their macro lenses boasting an impressive 2:1 magnification ratio. However, these lenses come with trade-offs: they lack weather sealing and electronic components, meaning no EXIF data for easy organization.

For sharp macro on the a7 IV with a good working distance, the Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS is an excellent choice. It\'s pricey but delivers superb image quality. If you want something more budget-friendly, consider exploring third-party options like Sigma or Tamron.
