What are some of the best Sony lenses for video recording in terms of image quality, autofocus, and versatility? Currently, I have Sony FX3.

For video recording on Sony cameras, I highly recommend the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II lens. Some key benefits:

  • Versatile focal range from wide-angle to short telephoto
  • Constant f/2.8 maximum aperture for low light and depth of field control
  • Fast and accurate autofocus, essential for video
  • Excellent sharpness and contrast throughout the zoom range
  • Premium build quality with dust and moisture resistance

It's a top performer and workhorse lens that covers most videography needs. A great investment if your budget allows.

I suggest you get the Sony FE PZ 28-135mm f/4 G OSS Full-Frame Power Zoom Lens, currently $500 off at Amazon: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Sony+28+135mm+Full+frame+Certified+Refurbished&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50

Like someone mentioned, staying within the native glass ecosystem is usually the safest move. I've been super satisfied with how well the autofocus handles on the FX3 when everything is native... honestly, it's just buttery smooth and I've had zero complaints so far. I'd actually suggest looking into native prime lenses as an alternative to the big zooms if you want that extra bit of light and a more compact setup. Just a word of caution tho... you gotta be really careful with 3rd party options or even some older glass. A lot of people don't realize that certain lenses don't support the linear manual focus response or the breathing compensation that's built into the FX3. It might seem like a small detail, but it's a total nightmare when your focus pulls feel inconsistent during a shoot. I'm a bit of a stickler for reliability, so I always tell people to double-check those compatibility charts. Better to be safe and stick with the gear that's guaranteed to play nice with the camera's firmware.
