^ This. Also, I honestly find those bulkier cage setups to be kinda disappointing for travel. They add too much weight without actually improving the ergonomics as much as you'd expect. I've had issues with generic handles feeling flimsy and almost lost my camera once because of a loose screw. Safety has to be the priority here given how slippery the rx100 vii is. Unfortunately, 40 bucks is tight but you have a few reliable options for safety:

  • Sony AG-R2 Attachment Grip is basically mandatory. It sticks to the front and gives your fingers something to actually grab.
  • Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod is much sturdier than those cheap flexible ones that tend to collapse under pressure.
  • Grab a Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap so it wont hit the pavement if it slips. I've tried the cheap knockoffs before and they just arent worth the risk to an expensive camera. Stick to the basics...

Like someone mentioned, these cams are super slippery. In my experience, adhesive grips eventually fail, so I prefer metal screw-in options.

Honestly, the rx series is basically impossible to hold without some extra bulk. In my experience, you need a dedicated handle to keep from dropping it. I've tried many different setups over the years and usually just tell people to go with any grip from SmallRig. You cant go wrong with their gear for the price. Itll make everything feel more secure without blowing your budget.

Regarding what #3 said about "Like someone mentioned, these cams are super slippery...."

  • I actually disagree on the metal grips being the only solid fix. In my experience over the years, those metal plates can feel a bit cold and don't always provide the best friction if your hands are dry. Since you're on a strict forty dollar budget, I'd suggest a combo that covers both the grip and the tripod needs without feeling cheap.
  • Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod Black - the legs are contoured so when they're closed, it acts as a really ergonomic handle.
  • MegaGear Ever Ready Leather Camera Half Case - this adds a bit of bulk and a lot of texture, making it way harder to drop. I've found that the PIXI is much more reliable than those flexible-leg tripods that tend to droop after a few weeks. It's solid enough to hold the VII even with the lens fully extended. You should be able to find both for right around your budget if you check the usual sites. It makes the camera feel a lot more secure during a long day of sightseeing...
